We have many events that you can support. Here are a few of our most popular:
The school’s annual International Day is the biggest event on the school’s event calendar. This charity event is a celebration of the hugely diverse cultures we have within the school community, bringing together families from over 50 nationalities in term one of each school year. Parents are invited to showcases their country and its culture or simply attend and enjoy the day. School staff run games for children, food vendors sell food from around the globe and a main stage has entrainment sourced from our talented community or often from beyond!
“As well as vital funds and awareness raised for our charities, International Day is a fantastic opportunity to bring our community together. This at the heart of what we do at the British School of Guangzhou, and we are very grateful to everyone for making the day a great success.” Mark Thomas, Principal.
Students bring in baked goods from home that they then sell to raise money for charity. These are hugely popular with students, who get a tasty treat, but more importantly are a great way for our younger students to start to get involved with charity work at the school. For more information, visit the Charity page.
Students participate in a number of sporting events throughout the year. The big events are the annual Swimming Galas and Sports Days where students love to see their parents cheer them on. In addition, it is a great opportunity for parents to meet others from the school community. For upcoming sporting events, see our School Calendar.
Family Christmas Lunch
The British School of Guangzhou’s annual Christmas event is held in a top Guangzhou hotel with parents and students from Early Years and Primary in attendance. Families can have their photo taken with Santa and every child receives a small gift. There are lots of fun activities to enjoy, for example Christmas crafts and gingerbread decorating! Due to the popularity of this event tickets are always in high demand and the atmosphere is always very festive.
Parties and School Discos
At the British School of Guangzhou parents and school staff join forces to create “spooktacular” parties for our students to celebrate various occasions throughout the year. Halloween is a big one but many other age specific events take place throughout the year. Parents often help to arrange decorations, special treats and snacks for the students to enjoy. These are not only a treat for the students but fantastic social occasions to enjoy after working hard on studies.
Chinese New Year
The Chinese department organise a week of fun activities focused around Chinese culture and traditions. The school is decorated in an array of red and gold beautifications created by students. Parents are invited to show off their skills by helping with activities like dumpling making, Chinese arts & crafts, tai chi and many more. International staff also love getting involved by taking part in Dragon Dances and the other festivities. All lots of fun but a really good way for all at the school to celebrate and better understand Chinese culture.
Theatre Productions and Performances
Students are given the opportunity to show many talents in various concerts and performances throughout the year. For example, choir and orchestra performances, theatre productions and dance shows, to name a few. Parents often come to watch and students benefit from these experiences immensely with increased confidence, coordination and the ability to develop teamwork skills outside the classroom or away from a sports activity. Last year’s big shows included fabulous productions of ‘The Little Shop of Horrors’ and ‘Oliver’, with this year’s productions eagerly awaited by all in the community. We’ve heard this year students and teachers are working on a script for ‘Grease’ but the students like to keep things quiet until rehearsals are well under way so we’ll have to wait until later in the year for more details!
Dress up days/ Non-uniform days
At various times throughout the year students are invited to dress in their own clothes or in fancy dress for special events. Book Week is a good example, where students come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to be creative and is certainly enjoyed by all, especially our younger students.
The British School of Guangzhou’s Early Years campus hosts a wonderful carnival each summer. Parents are invited to watch a performance and then head out for a picnic and games with the children. Stalls and activities are organised by school staff for all of the family to enjoy. A really great event for families of our very young students.
