Concert Choir is a Fine Arts elective for North Broward high school students. It aims to continue developing their vocal technique and ensemble skills. The choir is made up of forty-five high school singers and two student pianists. Ms. Elizabeth Korkosz has been the Choir Director for six years now. Listen to them perform three pieces which they have prepared so far this year. These songs are “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Ain’t No Grave Can Hold My Body Down,” and “Kuimba Nafsi Yangu.” Fall Concert Choir Performance
Concert Choir performs songs from all genres, styles, and languages. The students rehearse their fun and challenging repertoire as a large ensemble, as well as in smaller groups such as sectionals. They have performed songs in Swahili, French, German, Spanish, ASL, to name a few. In addition, they sing many songs from Broadway, Disney musicals, and famous movies. In school, throughout the year, they hold three concerts: the fall concert, pops Concert, and spring concert, as well as singing at North Broward’s Salute to America concert every year. Ms. Korkosz also gives the opportunity for some students to sing a solo of the “Star Spangled Banner” in school sport events.
Moreover, Concert Choir provides students the opportunity to participate in music festivals, local honor ensembles, state and district music events and competitions. It has also provided choir members with the chance to travel and sing around the U.S. The choir sang in Disney's Candlelight Processional in December of 2019. This event is a holiday celebration led by a celebrity narrator in Epcot at Walt Disney World, where they, as well as many other choirs, performed twelve holiday songs. In addition, students had the chance to travel to New York City to perform in Carnegie Hall. These trips allow their passion for music to flourish, and for students to spend time and connect with one another.
All in all, the North Broward Choir is a place where students get to explore their interests and expand their musical knowledge, while having loads of fun in the process. They also routinely share learning opportunities with professional musicians and participate in workshops about vocal health, composing music, and much more. NBPS choir is really one big family, where each student is given the chance to be themselves, and they are always encouraged to pursue their passions. Concert Choir is a safe space for all students to share their love of music!
