Staying Safe with Apps

As our students become more tech savvy, it becomes harder and harder for parents to stay current about what our children are using.  There are many wonderful Apps out there that inspire creativity but like any form of social media, there can be a down side. One very popular app is called Tik Tok and if your children aren’t using it yet, they likely soon will be. This app has merged with another very popular app “musical.ly”. Tik Tok allows users to upload short, non-music videos of themselves.  But, per most social media standards, the app has its drawbacks, including privacy concerns that parents need to be aware of. Tik Tok is open to the world and so this means that it is possible for some of the content to be mature in nature. It is important for parents to be aware of this and set privacy settings accordingly. The privacy settings allow protection and can limit who can see your child’s creations, send messages, leave comments, etc.   This app has a mature rating of 12+, but there are no systems in place to verify a user's age so it is available to just about anyone who wants it. If you are concerned about your child being exposed to mature content, you may want to consider setting the parent control settings on your child’s device. Reactions to video posts are limited to the heart emoji and promote positivity, however there are open forums where comments positive and negative can be shared.  Please take the time to have conversations with your children about what is appropriate to post and what is not. We also want to encourage our children to always bring inappropriate or disturbing content to an adult’s attention right away.
