Primary School Bulletin | 2nd November 2018

It has been another busy week here in Primary with all sorts of events happening throughout the week.

  • Primary Council 2018

Dear Parents,

On Monday and Wednesdays SEALS teachers welcomed parents in for our first SEALS PTCs of the year. It was a lovely opportunity to discuss the progress of the children so far as well as next steps moving forward.

Tuesday was the first opportunity for our student leaders to come together. Class representatives, school council members and playground leaders proudly wore their badges for their group photo. We look forward to seeing all the wonderful things they will no doubt achieve this year. Tuesday evening saw some very talented students performing in the music recital, more about which can be read below.

Never wanting to miss out on an opportunity to put on a costume, on Wednesday we welcomed skeletons, ghouls, ghosts and more to BSG as children and staff got into the spirit of the Halloween dress up day.

We now look forward to next week where we will be welcoming back Ros Ferrara who has been instrumental in supporting the development our English programme, alongside our curriculum leaders, in the primary phase. While here, teachers will take part in supported planning sessions as well as observing model guided reading lessons.

Have a restful weekend.

Assistant Head of Primary (Our Staff)

Tuesday Recital Series III
On Tuesday 30th October BSG students gave musical performances in our third Tuesday Recital Series. There was a great variety of performances in the programme from solo items, duets, drama monologues and chamber music. Some musical highlights included traditional Chinese Guzheng, Piano for four hands, our first Clarinet soloist and our Primary String Group playing Blue Monk jazz. A huge well done and thank you to all the students and staff that participated in the concert.

Dance update
The dance department would like to recognize the following students who have all demonstrated creativity, perseverance, energy and commitment within their dance lessons.
The October dance stars are:
Year 3: Ruby Lin
Year 4: Luca Pereira
Year 5: Vannie Lau
Year 6: Sarah Cheng
Dance is continually growing here at BSG and includes many performance opportunities. These performances require commitment, dedication and drive from the students and here at BSG, the students are demonstrating all of these qualities. The primary dance club will be making their debut performance at the Arts Celebration Evening on Thursday 8thNovember. Parents of students involved are invited to attend, but please confirm your attendance via as audience space is limited. There will also be the opportunity to watch the group perform at International Day on 17th November.

Charity Update
Hopeful Hearts provides life-saving heart surgery to children from low-income families in Guangzhou for specialist medical care.  We’d like to thank our talented and compassionate community for helping: BSG’s Got Talent, GISAC Swimming Gala and the Secondary School Halloween celebrations to raise a total of RMB 9,796 for Hopeful Hearts in recent weeks. Our Early Years parents are a tremendous support and have taken part in a Halloween Bake Sale selling delicious Halloween treats for the Early Years children. The bake sale raised a tasty RMB 1,165. Your commitment to helping others is truly amazing.

BSG and R&F
Over 50 of our Primary and Secondary students had the opportunity to go and watch a live Chinese Super League football game on Saturday 27th October. We were supporting the local Guangzhou R&F team who had a vital fixture against Tianjin Quanjian at the Yuexiushan Stadium. The stadium was buzzing with anticipation as the game started but an early goal from the opposition left the R&F team with a lot of work to do. But they never gave up and the crowd were treated to a very exciting game which had 3 penalties awarded and the final score of 6-2. Our students cheered and sang throughout the full 90 minutes but unfortunately the R&F team were beaten on this occasion. Despite the score, a valuable learning experience for all on the dedication and commitment required to become a professional footballer.

Rhinos kick, Rhinos pull, Rhinos can swim in the pool. Go BSG Swimmers!
BSG Swim Team set sail to its first swim meet at home this academic year last Saturday 27th October. BSG Swim Team swimmers were competing well with many other schools of GISAC. These schools are UISG, AISG, BASIS GZ, BASIS SZ, TIS, SIS, SWISS, NCPA, ISD, CIS, CGS, CISGZ, Dulwich and ULC, all together 15 teams.  BSG team entered 48 students who had been selected from BSG swim squad age groups, U11, U14 and U19. In U11 we had boys with Ningzheng, Devon, Sunny Liu, Artem, Josh, Polam, William, Xavier, Eddie, Felix, Andrew, Nemo, Alex Liu, Kaz and Gousthan; and girls with Subeen, Emma, Kiki, Isabella, Sari, Carolina, Louis, Bella, Yaffa, Chloris, Deborah, Selina, Jennifer, Mia, Yuhan and DuoDuo. In U14 we had boys with Hoya, Homi, Dhruv, Kayui, Thomas Diver, and Tiger; and girls with Annabel, Enni, Federica, Shirley, Christine, Amelie, Airi, Uliana and Alisha. And we had the only boy Schumi of U19.  Throughout 6 hours in 179 races, BSG swimmers overall have achieved 93 personal bests out of 114 races. A special mention and cheer should go to Schumi who set five records out of six races, setting a great example to the younger ones.

Early in the morning at 8am swimmers met at their tents located in the center of the secondary football field by the pool, where they would get ready putting on their caps and goggles to get in the pool where they would build friendship with their teammates.  After taking a quick register from a responsible and ambitious boy-Xavier, swimmers were off to the warm up pool.
First whistle came with 100IM events. This is the best view of how strong a team is. We definitely believe BSG is a strong team. Within 30 minutes of fierce competition, U11 girls came 1st, 3rd and 4th, and U11 boys came 1st, 6th and 7th; U14 girls came 3rd, 4th and 5th, and same ranks with the boys; Schumi came 1st with confidence. In the following races, our U14 girls team were shining in 100m events, ranking 3rd ,4th ,9th in freestyle; 2nd, 3rd, 7th in Breaststroke; 2nd, 3rd, 6th both in 100 Backstroke and Butterfly. What a solid age group for the secondary girls’ team!  Then viewing the boys’ team, U14 boys also declared their top three places in 50m and 100m events.

The relays were a great success and a fantastic team effort.
