  • Back to the 80s Cast

Introduction by Hollie Slaughter, Assistant Headteacher

Dear Parents,

This Tuesday saw the exciting reveal of who’s who in this year's Youth Music Theatre production. From the era that brought to the world the Rubik’s Cube, Atari and Rick Astley, we find inspiration for the musical ‘Back to the 80's’ which is set in the fictional William Ocean High School. You will be taken on a journey following Corey Palmer (played by Boyuan Xu, Year 9 and George He, Year 8) and Tiffany Houstan (played by Scarlet Corr, Year 9) under the watchful eye of Mr. Cocker (Jacky Guan, Year 10) and Ms. Brannigan (Amanda Pimentel, Year 9). This musical will be sure to have you dancing around in your leg warmers and neons!

Along the theme of dressing up, on Wednesday we indulged in some spook and scare for Halloween. Ranging from classic home-made walking ghost bedsheet, the humorous ‘cereal killer’ and some intensely realistic looking zombie scars (I blame the art department for the student’s realistic painting skills!) Many students were involved in dressing up and they even managed to raise some money for our chosen charities during an after-school Halloween movie showing of ‘Coraline.’

On Thursday, Mrs. Ozemoya, Mr. Nguyen and Ms. Angela took the Year 10 Art students and the ALPs students to South China Botanical Gardens in Guangzhou to sketch and draw natures finest creations found in exotic temperature controlled green houses and beautiful outdoor gardens. Observing and recording outside the classroom is an important skill for GCSE and A Level artists, it allows students to put their studio based drawing techniques into practice and gather photographs for their visual research.

This morning, Ms. Rice and Mr. Hallas travelled to Hong Kong with our Year 11 Geographers to collect important data for their IGCSE coursework. The primary aim of this fieldtrip is to complete questionnaires, surveys, counts, measurements and observations by visiting Stanley Market to focus on the potential conflict between tourists and locals, to make beach profiles in Repulse Bay and environmental quality surveys in Stanley Bay. Students will have an overnight stay in Hong Kong and will return on Saturday.

I hope you enjoyed catching up on this week’s update, I wish you all a joyful and restful weekend.

Kind Regards,
Hollie Slaughter

Arts Celebration Evening 2018
Preparations for this evening are well under way and we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to this event that is happening on Thursday, 8th November from 5.15 to 6:50pm. Anyone who attended last academic year, knows that they will be entertained by some fabulous Music, Art, Poetry and Drama pieces. This year we will have the addition of some fantastic dance performance by our new dance troops from both Primary and Secondary. If you would like to attend, then please RSVP to thearts@bsg.org.cn as there will be limited seating available.

Art Mock Exams
Please could all parents of students taking Art GCSE or Art A Level note that their mock examinations will take place on the 17th and 18th of December 2018 - the last two days of this term. This has been arranged to support the students as they also prepare for the mock examinations which continue directly after the holidays. This exam will allow students to create a final piece for their coursework projects before starting their exam project in the new year. This is a compulsory mock examination for all Art students.

Dance update from BSG:DC
The dance department would like to recognise the following students who have all demonstrated creativity, perseverance, energy and commitment within their dance lessons.

The October dance stars are:

Year 7: Heuyie Wong

Year 8: Sneha Chakraborty

Year 9: Audrey Schmuelling

Year 10/11: Carlos Park

Dance is continually growing here at BSG and includes many performance opportunities. These performances require commitment, dedication and drive and our students are demonstrating all of these qualities in abundabnce. BSG:DC will be making their debut performance at the Arts Celebration Evening on Thursday, 8th November. Parents of students involved are invited to attend, but please confirm your attendance via thearts@bsg.org.cn as audience space is limited.

Sports Update (Swimming & Football)
GISAC Swim Meet: BSG Swim Team dived into their first swim meet at home of this academic year last Saturday, 27th of October. Our dedicated swimmers were competing with technique and power against many other schools within GISAC. With outstanding performances across the boeard, special mention and cheer should go to Schumi who set five records out of six races, setting a great example to our younger athletes - well done Schumi.

A Thrilling Chinese Super League Football Game: Over 50 of our Primary and Secondary students had the opportunity to go and watch a Chinese Super League football game on Saturday, 27th October. We were supporting the local Guangzhou R&F team who had a vital fixture against Tianjin Quanjian at the Yuexiushan Stadium. Despite an amazing flurry of 8 goals, including 3 penalties, the home team lost 6 - 2 but a valuable learning experience for all on the dedication and commitment required to become a professional footballer.

Please find the attached Sports Update for more details of both events as well as some photos.

IA Bronze Practice Journey
This weekend the new intake of International Award participants take to the hills of northern Guangdong to complete a practice adventurous journey - a two day one night hike and trek. Students will be self-sufficient, carrying all their camping gear, food and water. It will be an opportunity to put to test what they've been practicing during the Tuesday ASA. On top of this, the weather forecast appears perfect, so it promises to be a great weekend.

For more information about this event or the International Award please contactjohn.joyce@bsg.org.cn
