6 Questions with Matthew Cox

What were your first impressions of the British School of Guangzhou?

I love the energy of the community at BSG. There is a positive, ‘can do’ attitude amongst our students, staff and parents that reflects the quality and the achievements of the school. My son has been here for the past three years and has enjoyed his time at BSG very much.

What is the most challenging thing about being the Head of Primary of the largest international school in Guangzhou?

It is a challenge to get to know all of our large community personally and individually, but I love talking to our families and finding out more about them; their backstory, as well as their hopes and dreams. It is a lot of people so definitely an enjoyable challenge.

How does our ‘be ambitious’ philosophy help our students and our staff?

The Nord Anglia guiding principle of ‘Be Ambitious’ supports our school very well. It reminds us to make sure our thinking and planning is big, bold and courageous, and in particular that teaching staff and their students have the very highest expectations of themselves and others. Be Ambitious keeps our focus on being truly world class.

How do you feel our ‘Mission’ and ‘Core Values’ should be used in a Primary school environment?

I feel strongly that the schools educate their students in all aspects of life, and that the very education includes  personal attributes, attitudes and a way of ‘being’ as well as academics. To shape and support the growth of our young people to have integrity and commitment , to become respectful and to encourage respect for all, is a central pillar of our Primary school.

Your favourite quote when it comes to education?

“Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.” W. B. Yeats (English poet)

What do you do with your spare time in Guangzhou?

I love to explore this great city and province and to eat interesting and sometimes unknown things at new restaurants with my youngest son and my wife. I have always enjoyed playing sports, so here in GZ I enjoy playing football and squash regularly despite the heat and humidity!
