Christopher Rees is one of BSG’s valued members of staff, having worked at the school for four years. Initially, when he completed his undergraduate degree, he began working at a university to help create sports development policies, before going to university in Southampton to complete his postgraduate degree. Before arriving at BSG, Christopher was already used to working in a high-pressure environment, as he worked in Year 6 for five years, where he had to prep the children for the start of the next chapter in their educational career.
Christopher had the yearning to work internationally, as it gave him opportunities to work in different environments and develop his teaching style. He believed working internationally would provide new professional and personal challenges and adventures.
The decision to move to Guangzhou was aided by the knowledge that he had family in China, which offered him a support network when initially arriving. BSG was the obvious choice for him — being British at a British school — so he was already familiar with the curriculum.
When arriving at BSG, Christopher was taken aback by the unique location of the school and thought it was 'really cool.' However, even before arriving, he was already comfortable becoming part of BSG, due to the excellent HR department who 'were very helpful', and who continue to be to this day.
BSG is 'more flexible with curriculum', which allows for more freedom in teaching to make it as catered to the children as possible. Through the years at BSG, Christopher’s 'confidence increased' due to the supportive and friendly nature of the team, and families at BSG.
When thinking of ways to improve his teaching and leadership, Christopher refers to the phrase, 'Be Ambitious', which to him means 'taking on every challenge as if there are no barriers, whether it is personal, academic or social.'
Laura Herrera is an amazing addition to the BSG science department. Specialising in physics, Laura started her career studying astrophysics at McMaster University and Warrick University. She went on to complete her Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa.
Laura initially worked at a school in Guangzhou called Huamei International School for two years, but was drawn to the British School after seeing a position advertised online, and for which she successfully applied.
Laura was drawn to the international lifestyle Guangzhou had to offer. After completing her Bachelor’s degree, she went to a job fair where she found many different places to apply. Although getting job offers from all over China, Laura chose Guangzhou as the city to move to because of the air quality. However, she admitted that she 'didn’t really have an idea of what Guangzhou was like'.
Laura, like Christopher, was amazed by the environment of the school when entering BSG for the first time, stating: "I loved the welcoming and warm feel, and really enjoyed the high-quality facilities the school has to offer.”
To Laura, the phrase 'Be Ambitious' is more than just words; to her it means: "You constantly strive to be the best version of yourself. Going on a journey of self-actualisation”.
