Sport at The British School of Guangzhou

We believe that taking part in sport and physical activity is an important part of every child's development, so we're pleased to offer our students a wide range of team and individual sports and other activities at our international school in Guangzhou. Find out how we make it easy for our students to stay fit and healthy during their time at our school.

Alongside our excellent Physical Education (PE) courses, students can get involved in a selection of sports at both competitive and recreational levels, with something to suit every interest and ability.

Competitive Sport

The British School of Guangzhou is a member of the Pearl River Delta Conference of Schools and is fortunate enough to play a number of tournaments across a range of activities over the course of an academic year.

Currently there are four seasons: football, touch rugby, volleyball and basketball, with badminton and athletics adding to this list. Teams train during after-school activities (ASA) and at lunchtimes, and there are regular fixtures against other Guangzhou teams during evenings and weekends.

The ASA programme also allows our teams to prepare for competing in FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia). The Under-13s tournament normally takes place in March/April, whilst the Under-15s tournament is in November. Our inter-school tournaments see students compete in swimming, athletics, football and basketball over the course of a four to five day tournament.

Recreational Sport

We also offer a number of recreational sports as part of our ASA programme, including golf, cross-country, table tennis, cricket, American football and badminton. This is further supplemented by lunchtime activities and house competitions in a range of sports.

Our commitment to providing opportunities for sport also extends to lunchtime clubs for secondary school students. Students can turn up whenever they wish – there's no need to sign up.

We have also launched regular climbing lessons with help from an outdoor education specialist. Morning climbing sessions, PE lessons and after-school activity groups have all embraced our age-specific climbing wall, and we have even introduced an annual speed climbing competition.
