Staff Profiles: John Joyce

John Joyce

Head of Year 12, IA Coordinator & Teacher of English

I have been a teacher of English for 10 years, working in three different schools spanning two different continents. My career began in Sunderland at Hylton Red House School, providing me with many rich and colourful experiences before heading out east to work at The British International School of Shanghai, Puxi.

At BISS Puxi I had a number of interesting roles, including teacher of English, teacher of Media and Head of Year. After a fabulous few years in Shanghai, an opportunity arose to go and work at St Joseph’s Institution International, a top International Baccalaureate school, in Singapore, and off I went to work with some of the most talented students on the planet.
As much as I loved working at SJII, I had decided China was the place I wanted to be. Having visited Guangzhou previously, I knew what a great city it was, so when a job opening came up at The British School of Guangzhou, it was the perfect fit.
In my spare time I have a wide range of interests – mainly physical activities – such as hitting the gym, road running, hiking, mountain-biking and running a men’s football team. I also hope to practice what I preach by writing for a local magazine: last year I was the sports and health/fitness contributor.
