Secondary Learning Support Leader

I have been a passionate and creative teacher since 2009 in Early Years, Primary and Secondary. My journey as a special education needs teacher and coordinator has been very personal when my nephew was diagnosed with autism 7 years ago. My personal and professional experience has taught me that every child matters and every child has the ability to learn. Understanding about students with special needs made me realise that I needed to adapt my teaching strategies to meet the needs of each student in my class and that I should never give up on them even when no strategies seemed to be working. I have also realised that every child is unique and that I should try to understand everything that affects their way of learning, in order to provide them with optimal learning environment.

I have been fortunate to have worked in both special needs school and mainstream schools with learning support program. While I was working in a special needs private schools in Thailand, I was teaching nonverbal students who were under severe autism spectrum disorder, using P’ Scales Assessments to assess their learning levels, creating IP (Individualized Program), and setting learning goals that were very direct, visible, challenging and achievable. Working in special needs school has brought more positivity in my life, as I witness the progress in each of my high needs students, when effective strategies were implemented consistently at home and school.

This experience has led me to take on another challenging role as a Functional Skills Program Coordinator with St Andrews International School Bangkok, one of Nord Anglia’s institutions.  Over the course of two years working with St Andrews International School Bangkok, I have helped develop Functional Skills Program (FSP) for students with additional needs, to have a smooth transition into Key Stage 3, and the program has now expanded from three students into a team of nine staffs and 10 students.

I have developed, designed and delivered functional skills curriculum in line with British National Curriculum where learning has been differentiated to the level of students with a range of learning needs. Based on my experience and research, I have also created an effective collaboration system for inclusion, where mainstream teachers and specialists working collaboratively in transitioning students from FSP to mainstream classroom and vice versa. I hold two master’s degrees (MA in SEN and Inclusion and MA in Educational Administration), and a UK certified SENCo (Special Education Needs Coordinator) award. 

Regardless of my qualifications and experience, I feel that my passion for working with special needs students is the primary drive for my success in bridging the gap between students with special needs and mainstream schools. I am delighted to join BSG as a secondary learning support leader this academic year (2019-20) and I look forward to working collaboratively with students, teachers, and parents in helping students with additional needs.
