Parent Update - 5 May 2017

05 May 2017

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents

Welcome back – I hope you enjoyed the break as a family and you are all suitably refreshed.

Our daughter visited from London and we spent a week touring Beijing, Xian and Shanghai – action packed but not relaxing!

Congratulations to the staff and pupils involved in the COBIS Primary Games who, by all accounts, represented the school very well, made new friends and enjoyed the experience. This week we have had a group of pupils attend the Cambridge Science Festival with Mr. Sutton, our STEAM Co-ordinator and Computing teacher. I have already been told how well they are doing and how impressive their attitude has been.

I have also been informed that our Inspection report is at the editing stage and I will soon receive a draft copy.

Have a good weekend.

Brian Cooklin

Proud to be at the MIT Festival

Isaac, Ethan, Jasmijn and Lune are currently in Boston for the MIT STEAM Festival. They’ve had a tour of MIT and taken part in some fantastic activities including a Virtual Reality game design workshop, a Pirate Training Camp and the 2.009 Product Engineering Processes Carnival. Working in teams, they have been challenged to design and build working alpha prototypes of new products. What an amazing experience! We can’t wait to hear more from the students upon their return. See what they’ve been up to here.

Our Year 8s’ ventured out and about to Mai Po Wetlands in order to get a better understanding of the diversity of Hong Kong's wetland ecosystem. It’s a great opportunity for them to gain knowledge in this area. If you’re interested in going yourself, check out this link. It’s a great day out for the family.

Day one for our Artist-in-Residence, Cornelia Erdmann working with our students.

Today was our Artist-in-Residence, Cornelia Erdmann’s first day at school and there was a real buzz from the students who met her. They can’t wait to get started. Every one of them is so excited over making their own artwork and ultimately seeing it up on the school walls! An award-winning artist specialising in public art, commissions and multi-media installations, Cornelia will be working with us for the next five weeks. Today the children created a silhouette design inspired by their favourite specialist subject focusing on the visual elements, shape, line and pattern.

Careers Fair Banner

Next Friday will see NAIS hold its first ever careers fair for our Year 8 and 9 students. We have invited the most experienced and knowledgeable professionals around, our parents, to come in and share with the students the ins and outs of their specific careers, the academic route they needed to take to get there and the special nature of the job that drives them. There will be numerous professions represented such as Veterinarian, Medicine, Midwifery, Law, Journalism, Hotel Management and of course Finance. The volunteers will have their own tables which the students will visit and ask questions about their profession. There will also be a series of presentations from speakers showing real life examples of their profession and giving the students a glimpse into the professional world.

It is not too late to offer your services!

If you would like to contribute to the fair and educate the students on your profession please contact Mr Bishop and he will book you a spot in the hall, christian.bishop@nais.hk

We look forward to what should be a great event!
