Since joining Village her 8th grade year, Hajra has been known by her peers as a true fashionista, working her passion for design into various projects, activities and even internships.
As a junior, Hajra secured an opportunity through The Village School’s Internship Program to work with critically acclaimed Houston fashion designer, Danny Ngyuen Couture, assisting with his fashion show that was fresh off the Paris runway. She gratefully recalls, “[Danny] took me in with no experience- I knew nothing!” From seating arrangement design to readying the models to walk the runway, she experienced first-hand all of the work and preparation required to execute such a premier event.
Simultaneously, Hajra was a student in Village’s Entrepreneurship Diploma Program (EDP), which focuses on developing entrepreneurial skills in students, with classes including finance, marketing, venture capital, leadership development and more. Through her EDP Capstone project, Hajra developed an online customizable clothing business, passionate about finding ways to help users customize their attire in today’s individualized market.
The summer before her senior year, she continued her internship with Danny Nguyen Couture, building on her previous experience and furthering her knowledge of the fashion industry. Nguyen took notice of her work ethic and invited Hajra to attend Paris Fashion Week and help work his shows. Hajra couldn’t believe it, “I’m just so stunned- If you had told me in 9th grade I’d be going to Paris, I never would’ve believed you!” The week was an incredible whirlwind of attending shows, building industry connections and gaining invaluable experience for her future.
“In the time I’ve worked with him thus far, I have gained so much knowledge not only about fashion, but on how to present oneself in the industry, utilizing things like networking and building a brand,” said Hajra. With direction and a confidence in her ability, Hajra now looks to what is next, as she will be attending Parsons The New School in NYC, ranked one of the top schools for fashion design in the world. She can’t wait to continue her journey at Parsons, saying, “I found a university that not only has an appreciation for art, but also an entrepreneurial spirit.”
