Fiona Macfarlane

Fiona MacFarlane

Pre-K4 Teacher

She slowly steps back to examine her work, or rather theirs, as she hangs the large paper mache animal her students have worked to create. It’s ocean month for the Pre-K4 class and she couldn’t be happier with the Orca Whale they’ve created to decorate her classroom.  At 6 feet long and 3 feet tall it was no easy task to hang, but it will be well worth it when her class files in and sees their work displayed. She’ll have a new student tomorrow and looks forward to watching their eyes open wide as she explains what brought the mammal to her classroom and how they all worked together to create it. There’s nothing like a first day in PreK4.

Fiona Macfarlane, a preschool teacher, was born in Bishopton, Scotland and over the course of her life, has moved 16 times. She studied at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Aberdeen where she received a B.S. in Honors Genetics and a Professional Graduate Diploma in Teaching. Fiona has been working at The Village School for six years as a Pre-K4 Head Teacher. When we asked her what she likes best about The Village School, she responded, “The diversity of staff and students, and the friendly and positive attitude.”

Her experience in international education serves her students well as she teaches them fundamental skills, how to work collaboratively with other students, and sparks their curiosity and eagerness to learn. Those characteristics are evident in her favorite quote from Mark Van Doren- “The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery.” She loves being able to take extra steps with them to open up a whole new world of discovery.
