The atmosphere at this year’s conference was fantastic as we got to meet people from a range of backgrounds and expanded our own horizons in terms of cultures and opinions. We engaged in fruitful debate and we have all come back enriched.
Ruby Branton
our Republic of Korea Ambassador
ISM students at BERMUN 2019 This November, our MUN team went to The JFK School in Berlin to attend the 28th Berlin Model United Nations (BERMUN). This is the second time that we have attended this prestigious conference. Once again, ISM were among the most outstanding teams at the conference. This November, our MUN team went to The JFK School in Berlin to attend the 28th Berlin Model United Nations (BERMUN).

Entrusted with representing the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, our students were an integral part of the conference, led by our ambassadors Aleena Watkins (DPRK) and Ruby Branton (ROK).

Ambassador Watkins set the tone for the DPRK’s position during the conference, with North Korea making it perfectly clear they were unwilling to unilaterally disarm. Among gasps in the room and applause from the Syrian delegation, Aleena recalled past instances of US malpractice with regards foreign policy.

Once the opening ceremony was completed, the delegations got to work crafting resolutions. Representing South Korea, Nara Mammadova was the driving force behind the early exchanges in the Special Conference, addressing a range of information points with both respect and an attention to detail.  In the Political Committee, Vladimir Molchanov greatly impressed as a first time delegate, really getting into character and passionately defending a nation’s right to ‘supervise and assist’ their own people.

We have been very lucky in our school that we have had such dedicated students attending these conferences for a number of years. Luckily, they have also been very proactive in helping others, to the extent that fifteen additional students also attended the BCNMUN in Barcelona, having been trained up by Ilya, Camilla, Ruby, Nara, Lucia and Aleena. Thanks to them, the Model United Nations has become a vibrant and thriving aspect of life in our Secondary school.
