Dear DCIS Parents and Guardians,

Moving from Primary to Secondary School is a big step for any student. The advantage we have at DCIS is being a ‘through school’, so that students who were here in Year 6 have had an opportunity to experience a few days in the secondary environment before they arrive. There are many differences between Primary and Secondary and we are all delighted with the way the students have displayed resilience and tenacity and have risen to the demands.  It is a steep learning curve and we will continue to challenge our students to help them build their skills for the milestones that lie ahead.

I would like to thank you all for your support for the exciting programme of trips we have planned for students from Year 5 to Year 11. I am pleased that parents have submitted some excellent questions and have been so supportive of the whole process. As the excitement builds we will continue to provide all the information needed to make sure these trips are hugely beneficial to all students involved.

The Secondary School continues to develop and grow and we will be experiencing a number of ‘firsts’ again this year. Highlights are below:

  • We are sending our first cohort of students on the NAE Tanzania expedition in November
  • Participation in sports has increased dramatically again this year. We currently have a number of fixtures on a weekly basis against other schools and are experiencing some tremendous success
  • With the introduction of drama into the Key Stage 3 curriculum we witnessed the Shakespeare flash mobs at break time and lunchtime with some excellent performances from our Year 7 students
  • Mr. Fisher launched the NYAA last week (the Singapore equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award). We have an excellent number of students sign up for this and we are looking forward to helping them prepare as they work towards their first award

I enjoyed seeing so many parents at the Year 5 – 11 coffee mornings. High quality communication is a key factor in the success of our students and it was good to talk through our vision and strategy with those who attended. The level of positivity was hugely appreciated and your support and appreciation is important to all the teaching staff. The next part of this will be our Parent Conference Evenings that will take place during the first week after half term. This is a great opportunity for parents to catch up with individual subject teachers to talk about progress. I strongly encourage you to attend and we will be sending out details shortly so you can book appointments with the teachers.

Finally, you will have read about our IGCSE successes and our designation as an Edexcel Centre of Excellence. It gave me great pleasure to attend the ceremony to receive this award, together with the Highest Mark in Singapore awards on behalf of our students. The award ceremony took place at the Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre and I received the award on behalf of DCIS from the British Deputy High Commissioner and a representative from Pearson. I certainly felt fortunate and very proud as an educator to celebrate the achievements of DCIS and our students.

Kind regards,

John Smith
DCIS Head of Secondary
