In last week’s Friday Assembly, we celebrated numerous successes of both children and adults with the focus of ‘Taking Responsibility’. Following this assembly, the successes have continued into this week too.
Primary FOBISIA Mathematicians – Champions!
Firstly, I would like to congratulate the amazing achievements of Yoon Jun, Yule Un, Kathy and Quynh An, all from Year 6.
Last weekend, all four represented BIS HCMC, Junior Campus in the annual FOBISIA Maths Competition. This event took place with one hundred and twenty elite mathematicians from thirty international schools from as far away as Korea, India, Singapore, Indonesia and many places in between and after two difficult days of competition, they were crowned champions!
This is an incredible achievement for our school and we would all like to congratulate our rock star mathematicians on a fantastic effort. Well done all!
Read more about their achievements in this post by Mr Andy James, Year 5 Teacher and Mathematics Leader.
Primary Spring Fair 2018
Last Sunday, our largest Primary event of the year, the PTG Spring Fair, took place at the EY&IC. With a community focus, all those who attended experienced stalls, shows, games and a plethora of food and drink to make this an event to remember in our school calendar.
A huge thank you to Niki Aurora-Gupta and her Spring Fair Committee - Akiko, Gloria, Eva, Grace, Duyen, Linh, Nha, Marcia, Sandy, Anouk, Alex, Wendy and Nicky for putting this event together over the last 2 months.
Thanks also to Leanne and Nandini for helping run the raffle on the day, Kate our Treasurer, Jay our photographer, Minori for her wonderful artwork/creativeness and also to Duyen, Mr Jon and Ms Beth for putting together such great parent and children’s choirs. In addition, thanks to all of the BIS HCMC staff who gave their time and energy to this event.
Thank you to all of you who supported this event by attending on the day, purchasing raffle tickets and offering your generous sponsorship. Well done everyone!
Read more about the event and have a look through some great pictures of the day in this post.
Music is an integral part of our curriculum at BIS HCMC and recently, at only 9 years of age, one of our Year 4 students, Kunho made his debut performance at one of the most prestigious classical music venues in the world; Carnegie Hall in New York. On behalf of all of our BIS HCMC community, huge congratulations go out to Kunho on this outstanding achievement at such a young age!
This story demonstrates that with passion, determination and the support from your community there is no limit to what your child can achieve. How can you start your #BISHCMC Story?
Take time to read more about Kunho’s musical journey in this post.
Junior Campus Friendship Day – Friday 6th April
Friday 6th April is Friendship Day for the Junior Campus. This is a day for children to celebrate the friendships they already have while also making new friendships.
As part of Friendship Day, all children will be asked to wear an old white t-shirt which will be signed by their friends during the course of the day. This will be a lasting memory which they can keep to remind them of Friendship Day and of their friends at BIS HCMC. PE and Swimming lessons will continue as usual so please send your child to school with the correct kit if it is their PE day.
Each class will also share some food with their friends on this day. Children should come to school in the morning with a small snack, remembering that all products should contain no nuts. In a bid to become more environmentally friendly, we would like children to bring their snack in a non-disposable container. It should have your child’s name on and be made from a safe, strong material.
For further information, please feel free to speak to your child’s class teacher.
Look out for next week’s Update for the announcement of our newly chosen Friendship Leaders. This will be shared with the children in our whole school assembly on 6th April.
Football Match Report
Congratulations to our D team boys and A team girls who played against the Australian School on Wednesday afternoon.
The boys were thrown together after just a few weeks of training, and after a rocky first half found their groove and won the second half. Final score AIS 6-3 BISHCMC.
The girls were organised and disciplined, attacking the AIS goal from all angles. Good team work with passes, and some jinking solo efforts saw our BIS team triumph 6-0.
Well done to all involved and our parents support.

Ms Astley (Secondary Drama Teacher) Visits Juilliard
Earlier this month, a group of Nord Anglia Education teachers from around the world came together in New York City for a professional development workshop at The Juilliard School. This training formed the foundation of the new Juilliard-Nord Anglia Drama curriculum which will be implemented at The British International School, Ho Chi Minh City from August 2018. Read more about how our children will be inspired in this post by Ms Anne-Marie Astley, Secondary Drama Teacher.
The Day the Chairs Quit!
There was confusion in Year 2 this week as the classroom chairs went on strike due to the fact that they didn’t think the children were treating them very well! The children soon realised their mistakes and wrote letters back to the chairs to get them to return to the classrooms so the children could continue to use them! Read more about how this strange situation unfolded in this post by Ms Gemma Gotting, Year 2 Teacher and English Leader.
5 Key Questions to Ask When Choosing an International School
With an array of schooling options available in any given city, parents may feel confused with which school to choose for their child. As an experienced school leader and parent, Ethan Hildreth tells us what every parent should ask themselves when choosing an international school for their child in this very interesting and informative post.
Family Information Sheets
As a reminder to all families across BIS HCMC, the ‘Family Information Sheets’ that were distributed to your child last week must be completed and returned to school.
It is extremely important that we have up to date and accurate information for each student in case of an emergency. As always, your support in this matter is very much appreciated.
Following a successful first week, we would like to further remind parents that all children who depart school on school buses meet the bus monitors for registration in the ELC. The ELC is located on the ground floor next to the nurses’ room.
We have made this decision to keep the children safer with so many buses on site and also to keep them cool and dry as the weather both heats up and as the rainy season approaches.
The bus monitors will walk the children to the buses once everyone has arrived. Secondary students will go directly to the buses as normal.

Copies of the reply slips can be collected from the Junior Office. All fees must be paid to the Cashier no later than Friday 7th April to secure your child’s place.

I do hope that you will take this opportunity to benefit from this high level of coaching and your child enjoys the fun and exciting environment created at BIS HCMC.
Driver’s Code of Conduct
In order to keep our children safe on the roads outside BIS, both before and after school, please can you spend a few minutes of your time discussing the following points with your drivers.
- Ask your driver to show respect to our guards and follow their instructions – they are there to keep you all safe and have a difficult job when drivers ignore their instructions.
- Explain to your driver that their actions reflect upon your family – ask them to respect all of our school community to make our school the very best that it can be.
