This term, Year 5 EAL students were empowered by inspirational speakers and used this as motivation to reflect on important issues.
Students used the P.E.E.L method to help structure their paragraphs into a strong, persuasive speech. The P.E.E.L paragraph writing approach is a proven way to help students' writing process by providing a structure for their writing:
- Point - make your point
- Evidence - back it up: support your point with evidence and examples
- Explanation - explain how the evidence supports your point
- Link - link this point to the next point in the following paragraph or back to the main question
Students then evaluated the effective features of public speaking and rehearsed relentlessly day and night to deliver their speeches with expression, gestures and eye contact. Public speaking isn’t for everyone, but I was so proud of each and every EAL student as I watched them grow in confidence to become a brave speaker. You can find their passionate speeches on display next to the EAL office on the second floor. We have also included some examples in the images above. Well done, everyone!
