As part of a cross curricular project in their Art and History lessons, Year 9 students created a gallery of Holocaust Memorial Work. Our students began their studies of the Holocaust in January to align with Holocaust Memorial Day. They studied key themes of the Holocaust including: the dehumanization and escalation of cruelty towards targeted groups in Nazi Germany 1933-45. Simultaneously in Art they explored relevant imagery, ideas, and materials and made links between Contemporary Art and commemoration
The result was some beautiful and thoughtful memorials that took many forms and the students showed remarkable reflection on both the events and concepts studied. They displayed highly impressive work, and they shared their reflections by leaving comments around the pieces they particularly appreciated.
