The halls of the Primary School came alive with excitement, creativity and entrepreneurship as our Years 4, 5, and 6 students proudly hosted a new initiative: BISS-ness Day. What began six weeks ago as a mathematics project centred around financial literacy transformed into a vibrant marketplace filled with innovation, determination and student agency.

The British International School Shanghai is entering an exciting new phase of development, with major upgrades designed to enrich every stage of school life — from our youngest learners in Early Years to our Senior School students preparing for university.

Our Year 12 Biology students recently travelled to the DNA Learning Centre in Suzhou for an exciting and enriching two-day experience in modern genetics and biotechnology. Affiliated with the world-renowned Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a leading biomedical research institution since 1890 and home to eight Nobel Prize winners, the centre provided students with a unique opportunity to experience advanced molecular biology techniques firsthand.

BISS has achieved Silver of the prestigious Social Impact Distinction – marking the school’s significant progress on working within NAE’s Social Impact Distinction programme.

The 2026 NAE Regional STEAM Festival, hosted at BISS, was an exciting celebration of creativity, innovation and collaboration, bringing together students from across the Nord Anglia Education region to tackle one big question: how can humans survive and thrive on Mars?

What happens when young voices are given a platform, a purpose, and the confidence to speak? At BISS Talks 2026, the answer was clear, powerful ideas, courageous storytelling, and truly inspiring performances.

Ten student leaders from BISS Puxi represented the school at the ACAMIS Student Leadership Conference at United World College, Changshu. According to the ACAMIS website, the conference is grounded in the principles of Academic and Cultural Enrichment (ACE). It was designed to provide a safe, inclusive and enriching environment where students could collaborate, test ideas and develop the confidence and skills required to lead change beyond their own school context.

Fifteen dedicated students from BISS Puxi set off early on the morning of Friday 6 March, travelling across Shanghai from Minhang to Pudong for the final Model United Nations conference of the academic year: Wellington MUN. Leaving campus early, the group, a fantastic mix of new delegates attending their first conference and experienced participants, showed impressive commitment as they prepared to represent a range of countries across multiple committees.

We are proud to share an exciting snapshot of early university offers received by our Year 13 students. This stage of the application journey reflects months of careful planning, academic commitment and personal growth. From preparing for subject-specific entrance assessments and interviews to refining personal statements, portfolios and academic profiles, our students have approached this demanding process with maturity, resilience and purpose.

Recently, the school received excellent news as our Year 11 early entry IGCSE Mathematics students received their results from the November examination session. The outcomes were absolutely outstanding, with every student achieving a Grade 8 or Grade 9, and the majority securing the highest possible grade. These results reflect both the students’ commitment and the high level of support provided by their teacher.

In our fast-paced world, the concept of balance has never been more critical. Whether in personal development, training routines, or family life, finding the equilibrium between effort (yang) and relaxation (yin) can lead to a more fulfilling and productive existence. Let's explore the importance of balancing training with downtime and family time, backed by research that underscores this essential principle.

I recently had a great conversation with a colleague after a sports education lesson with our Year 11 student athletes. During our debrief, she shared her experience of feeling the energy and presence of a player she "just happened" to watch during a netball competition in Suzhou, China. When a player from a different team stepped onto the court to take the center position, she sensed something extraordinary. As soon as the referee blew the whistle and the ball left the player’s hands, she instantly recognized that this athlete had the X Factor!
