She has both a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Education from Exeter University in the UK and holds the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH). In August 2021, Jayne became the Principal of BSB Shunyi. To lead a Nord Anglia Education school is both an honour and a privilege; the ‘Be Ambitious’ philosophy of the organisation motivates and resonates strongly with her. What continues to inspire her? Challenging students to aim high; to be the best that they can be, academically and personally; and to make a difference in their school, community, and the world beyond. She loves promoting and ensuring excellent teaching and learning. Jayne’s own two ‘children’ are no longer children and are starting out in their own careers in Greece and in Dubai, respectively. She looks forward to exploring Beijing and beyond with her husband, as they love to travel and to absorb new experiences and cultures.

Randall Crismond
Assistant Head of Secondary, English Teacher
BSB’s focus on the whole child is very appealing to me as an educator – the rigorous academics coupled with development of all the social and personal skills required for a person to be successful in their future.
Randall Crismond

BA, PGCE, CELTA

I am originally from Philadelphia, in the United States, and I have been teaching abroad both in Japan and across China after my graduation from Pennsylvania State University in 1999 with a BA in History, with minors in Music and Middle Eastern Studies. Most recently, I have worked at the Centre for Overseas Academic and Cultural Exchange at Tsinghua University, and as Head of English, IB Coordinator, and most recently Academic Principal at The International Curriculum Centre of RDFZ RenDaFuZhong (The High School Affiliated with Renmin University).  During this time I obtained my PGCE from Sunderland University, and am currently studying for my MA Education with the same institution. I also have a Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).

I joined BSB in 2020 as an English Teacher, IB CAS Coordinator and Theory of Knowledge Coordinator. In 2021, I also took on the role as Higher Education Advisor.  BSB’s focus on the whole child is very appealing to me as an educator – the rigorous academics coupled with development of all the social and personal skills required for a person to be successful in their future.  BSB’s IGCSE and IB curricula also fit well with my own teaching experience.  I particularly enjoy leading the IB Theory of Knowledge course!

Outside of school, I am a new father, an amateur photographer, a voracious reader, and an explorer of Beijing, where I’ve lived for the last 15 years.  I look forward to getting to know Shunyi better, and my own daughter’s start at BSB in 2021!

She graduated from the University of Hull with a BA Joint Honours in English and American Studies, and then completed a PGCE in Secondary English in 2004. She began her teaching career in the Devon state schools. Passionate about English, she quickly moved into middle management, first as Deputy Head of Department, and then as Head of Department. She was also fortunate to be given the opportunity to work for the publisher Heinemann, contributing to a KS3 English textbook and writing two GCSE English teacher guides.

Growing up in England, Scotland, and the Netherlands, Sarah developed a taste for living in different countries as a child. Beginning first as an English teacher, Sarah quickly became Head of Department again.

At NAIS Pudong, Sarah first experienced the IB Diploma (IBDP). Coordinating the curriculum for the English department, teaching English Literature, and being an Extended Essay Supervisor and an IB examiner all instilled within her a deep appreciation for the IBDP values and approaches. The characteristics encouraged in the Learner Profile, the holistic design of the course, and the emphasis on international perspectives are all elements of the IBDP that she believes lead to excellent educational outcomes.

Her commitment to learning led her to pursue a master’s degree in Philosophy and Education at Columbia University, New York in 2014. She then became Head of Middle School at Nord Anglia International School, New York, where she set up and added a Middle School Phase onto the existing primary school. As a member of the Senior Leadership team, she oversaw academic and pastoral well-being of the middle school students.

I am very excited to be here at BSB Shunyi, having long known about the school’s excellent learning and teaching standards. I enjoy working together with the students and other teachers in the school. I believe that learning never ends and books, people and nature are a continuous source of wonder. I was born in Romania and had my first international experience during my university years when I travelled to China to study for two years. After graduating I decided to live abroad.

I have two young children who are very excited to be in Beijing and explore this wonderful city full of history. I hope they can continue to travel and learn about new cultures and places. I try to instil in my students and my own children a curiosity and passion for learning and respect for all living things. Questions are more important than answers and we should never stop asking questions.

Quynh Chesher
Pre-Nursery (Teddies) Teacher
I was super excited to join the BSB EYFS team in March 2021 as a Class Teacher. I thoroughly enjoy teaching children and I love to see how excited they are and how eager they are to learn.
Quynh Chesher

BA

My name is Quynh (pronounced Quinn). I received my first Bachelor of Arts university degree in History and my second degree in English. I am currently completing a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from The College of New Jersey.

In 2014, I started my teaching career at ISHCMC, International School Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam as a middle school history teacher. After getting married, my husband and I moved to Kuala Lumpur (KL).  After teaching EYFS and Primary students at Mont'Kiara International School in KL, I made a conscious decision to switch to be an EYFS and Primary school teacher.  In 2019, when our son was old enough to enroll in Teddies at BSB Shunyi I joined BSB as a 1-1 Teaching Assistant in Year 5. In the 2020 academic year, I have been working as a permanent supply teacher in the Reception year group, supporting children with their learning both in and outside the classroom, teaching phonics, maths and all other class-based subjects.

I am super excited to join the BSB EYFS team in March 2021 as a Class Teacher. I thoroughly enjoy teaching children and I love to see how excited they are and how eager they are to learn.  Daily they come to school with open minds and with playful attitudes about learning. I believe each child is special and deserves love, kindness, attention and most importantly education. Watching them learn, play, make mistakes and develop is truly an amazing experience for me. As an educator, I always give my best to support them and build up their confidence with care and a kind heart.

Personally, I enjoy travelling and exploring different countries and different cultures, especially their food. I also spend a lot of time doing meditation and yoga. I am married and our son Tommy is a student in Early Years too.

BIHTM, PGCEi

I have a bachelor’s degree with the University of Queensland (Australia) majoring in management and have attained my PGCEi through the University of Nottingham (UK) with distinction.

While I have lived mostly in China and Australia, I have travelled for personal and business reasons to many other countries and am genuinely interested in the benefits of being a global citizen. International education, therefore, has always been something I am passionate about. With the birth of my son, I became a stay-at-home mother and continued with this important job for a few years before returning to the workforce again as a full-time working mother. During this time, I pursued an interest in child psychology, early childhood development, and language acquisition for young children. I’ve also worked within administrative and translating positions at an international bilingual school (K-12).

In the past couple of years, I have worked full-time at BSB with our youngest students and have had the great opportunity to work with all three age groups within EYFS as a cover teacher in the past school year. It is such a great pleasure to meet and know all the EYFS students and to be able to witness the progress these wonderful children have made in our school setting. I am honored to continue my journey with BSB in this loving and caring environment.

Besides work and family, I like photography and language learning. I am bilingual in English and Mandarin and aim to become fluent in a couple more languages. Both of my children have attended BSB in the past few years and my family lives quite a simple lifestyle. We love spending time together and exploring different books, toys, food, places and playing with our dog.

I look forward to working with our youngest students who I am certain will have a very joyful and fruitful experience here with us at BSB Shunyi.

These experiences have truly made me into the teacher I am and have been a rewarding experience.

I decided to come to BSB Shunyi in August 2022 and take the opportunity to join a talented team of education professionals,  focused on the quality of teaching and learning and overall child development. I couldn’t pass up the chance to be a part of a great team like that.

I love to do crafts and hands-on projects. I have been an avid crocheter and love to cook. I love animals! After graduation I worked for EF for two and a half years up until I had my daughter, and then I focused on family life for a year. Since September 2020 I worked for another international kindergarten as a Homeroom teacher for one academic year.

I am very passionate, caring and love to share knowledge and make people smile! I have a keen interest in Asian languages, music and animals! I have lived in Beijing for 8 years and love the culture, people and the food here and consider Beijing to be a second home. I have a family here, my daughter is 20 months old. Craig Townsend

Working with young children has been very rewarding and also fun. Every day I come to work happy and leave happy.
Craig Townsend

BA, iPGCE

I graduated with a BA in Sociology & Social Policy from University of Leeds and received my iPGCE from University of Derby.

I first started teaching more than ten years ago when I took a teaching position for a charitable organisation helping adults with learning difficulties improve their reading and writing abilities. I took this role as I wanted to do something beneficial for society and to help improve people's lives. This is why I enjoy teaching, helping people make progress, and seeing those improvements come to fruition. It is a very rewarding role wherein every day is different, with new sets of challenges, and endless job satisfaction and joy.

I came to China in 2017 and worked with a training centre for one year and then worked for a UNESCO certified kindergarten thereafter. Working with young children has been very rewarding and also fun. Every day I come to work happy and leave happy. It is a career I am continuing to study and gain further certification in, and I am happy to have chosen one which is so rewarding and full of such joy.

I have been living in China for five years now, a decision which I first took as I love adventure and as it enabled me to continue working within the field of teaching. I love travelling to different countries and meeting people. Previously I had travelled solo across Southeast Asia for three months, and have been to, and made friends in, many European countries. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, going on long bike rides, and I try to be creative whilst indoors. On an amateur level I enjoy re-editing movies, and I have also tried making a small video game recently which enabled me to not only be artistic, but I also learned basic programming skills, design, and how to use several different computer programs. I'm a keen reader and I'm currently reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Shannon Gallagher
Reception Teacher
I have been an Early Years specialist in Beijing for 5 years and am extremely grateful for the experiences, opportunities and challenges that I have had with young children  ages 3-6.
Shannon Gallagher

BA

Since graduating with a BA in Applied Language and Translation Studies from Dublin City University, it has been a main ambition of mine to work within education. I have spent five years living and working as an Early Years specialist in Beijing. I am extremely grateful for the experiences, opportunities and challenges that I have had over recent years collaborating with young children from ages 3-6.

My experience teaching with young learners has provided me with opportunities working with various curricula, the most recent being IB Primary Years Programme. I ensure to meet the holistic and academic needs of the learners in my care, through understanding the child’s strengths, interests and limitations – while also having fun!

I love to stay active by playing sports. I play for a women’s football team, in addition to playing Gaelic football. On the weekends, I enjoy getting out of the city and hiking on the Great Wall and afar. I have a lot of passion for languages and have studied both Chinese and French at university level. "Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things but learning another way to think about things." - Flora Lewis

I am very much looking forward to joining BSB Shunyi in 2022 and working with the EYFS team to provide a challenging, exciting and caring environment for my new students.

Jennifer Morgenthaler
Reception Teacher
I believe individualised learning is the best way to meet the needs of the child in the classroom situation and make learning fun for each student in their individual learning styles
Jennifer Morgenthaler

BSc. PGCE

I  have a Bachelor of Science in International Business from Palm Beach Atlantic University and a PGCE in General Education (Focus: Early Childhood) from Leeds Becket University.

I have worked in China for five years in both public and international schools. For me BSB is a place where I have dreamed of working for many years, and I am so excited to have the opportunity of being part of this team. I greatly respect the British curriculum as I feel it incorporates several of the best teaching practices from different pedagogies. I am a huge fan of individualised learning. I believe it to be the best way to meet the needs of the child in the classroom situation and make learning fun for each student in their individual learning styles. I cannot wait to meet everyone and start my journey as a Reception teacher at BSB Shunyi!

During my time in China, I experienced teaching EAL to public primary school students. Independently teaching classes of 50 students taught me valuable classroom management skills which benefit me to this day. It was an amazing experience, and I learnt that my passion lies in spending more time with individual students to better meet their educational needs. Eager to make a bigger impact with personalised education, I then went on to teach at the International Montessori School of Beijing in the Early Childhood department. I was very happy to be part of this team and fell in love with the open floor plan and individualised learning facilitated there. I was fully convinced of my calling to become a teacher, and began my PGCE in 2018. I focused on Early Childhood Education and became familiar with the EYFS framework as well as how it relates to the Montessori pedagogy.

On a more personal note, I will start by saying I am soon to be a newlywed! My fiancé and I are tying the knot this summer in Sanya. I am a vegan and an organiser for the non-profit group ‘Vegans of Beijing’, where I put together monthly events and work with emerging vegan companies to promote their products. In my spare time I can be found experimenting in the kitchen, getting creative with vegan baking. I also love hiking, running, and playing various sports such as badminton, squash, and tennis.

My desire is to inspire and nurture a lifelong love for learning in my students and to communicate that any aspiration or goals they have are valid and attainable.
Beatrice Ogendi

BA (Hons), MA, TESOL

I am a BA honors graduate in Development Studies from Nkumba University in Uganda and have a Master’s degree in Human Resource Management from the same institution.  After a career spanning 15 years in banking, I moved to Uganda where I worked as an Administrative Assistant at the International School of Uganda for 9 years.  During this time, I developed an interest in teaching and the school sponsored my first online Primary International Baccalaureate training.

My family moved to British Colombia in Vancouver for two years where I worked as a volunteer in The Fraser Institute before moving for Beijing in 2016.  In 2017, I gained my TESOL certification with Arizona State University and began working as a supply teacher in various international schools in Beijing, including BSB Shunyi. I then completed a teacher certification course through Moreland University in Washington, DC and have spent the past two years teaching in different roles in international schools in Beijing.  I feel extremely privileged to be part of the great team of educators in BSB Shunyi starting in September 2021 and look forward to having a wonderful year of exciting learning with my Year 5 students.

My desire is to inspire and nurture a lifelong love for learning in my students and to communicate that any aspiration or goals they have are valid and attainable. I will always encourage them to set high achievable standards for themselves, strive to reach their potential and to understand that while they are ultimately accountable for choices they make, my responsibility is to support and guide them in making the right decisions/choices.  I am living in Beijing with my husband who is also an educator, a proud mother of two, Paul, a pilot and Ian, an IT guru with Microsoft.  I love cooking and making new friends.

Steve Linahan
Year 1 Teacher, Head of Year 1
My previous role as Head of a small British Curriculum Primary school was a wonderful opportunity for me to make a positive impact across all aspects of school life, and to work with children across the primary age range.
Steve Linahan

BA (hons), PGCE, NPQH

I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Philosophy from the University of Leeds and received my PGCE from University College of Ripon and York St. John. The first twelve years of my teaching career were spent working in state primary schools in the North West of England. During this time, I was fortunate enough to be able to contribute to pupil progress both at classroom and whole school level. In my last role in the UK, I was promoted to the role of Deputy Headteacher. After successfully completing my NPQH in 2008, I moved to Saudi Arabia to take on the headship of a small British Curriculum Primary school. This was a wonderful job, providing me with an opportunity to make a positive impact across all aspects of school life, and to work with children across the primary age range.

After my last role as Deputy Head at the British International School Riyadh, Diplomatic Quarter, I felt it was the right time to take on a new challenge outside of Saudi Arabia. BSB Shunyi, with its excellent reputation was the perfect choice, and I am very much looking forward to joining and leading the Year 1 team in August 2022.

In my spare time, I hope to be travelling, exploring locations that are off the beaten track, finding new places to eat and drink and learning as much as I possibly can about the culture of my new home. My other passions include making sure I always have a good book on the go and playing my guitar. I’ve recently taken up golf which is providing me with joy and frustration in equal measure.

Stephanie Hacon
Year 1 Teacher
My goal within a student-orientated environment is to foster trust, encourage independent thinking, and to accompany the children in exploring new territories and embarking on adventures together.
Stephanie Hacon

BA

I received my BA in Mandarin and History of Art/Archaeology from SOAS, University of London. I am in the process of completing a PGCEi from Nottingham University, UK. I am absolutely delighted to have this opportunity to enhance my teaching qualifications, skills and knowledge based on several years of teaching in EYFS environments and Primary schools.

In 2017 with the imminent arrival of my son, Sebastian, I began delving into books about raising and communicating with children. What I read soon drove me to leave my former career in the Art world and dive into the world of Education. Since then, I have been working with Early Years at international schools in Beijing. I am thrilled to be joining the BSB EYFS team in August 2021.

As an educator, I see it as my role to demonstrate that learning is a two-way road. The children will be as much my guide as I will be theirs. Equally, I am a strong believer that a sense of humour is a key ingredient to building relationships within the classroom. My goal within a student-orientated environment is to foster trust, encourage independent thinking, and to accompany the children in exploring new territories and embarking on adventures together.

I met my husband, Li Xia, whilst on my year abroad in Beijing studying at the Beijing Normal University. After graduating, I moved directly to Beijing - this was almost ten years ago! Since then, we have had our son, Sebastian, who will be joining BSB’s Nursery this term. We enjoy living in Shunyi and taking advantage of its location. It’s proximity to the mountains and nature make it a wonderful area for exploring. As a family, we are partial to trying new foods as well as listening to music from all over the world.

Taz Kim

BA, PGCE, TESOL

Having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education Studies at University College London Institute of Education (UCL IOE), I have consistently strived to broaden my expertise and knowledge in the field of teaching. I have gained invaluable experiences in teaching and learning whilst completing the PGCE Primary (with QTS) at UCL IOE and TESOL (CELTA) at St. Giles in the UK.

Since then, I have worked in South West London as a Primary school teacher in both KS1 and KS2. It is my utmost belief that in every classroom, the foundations of learning are constructed interactively between the teacher and pupils. I believe that the child should always be put first in whatever a teacher does.

Growing up in Korea and living in the UK has enabled me to appreciate the very different yet interconnectedness of both cultures. Though it will be my first time in China, I am very excited to find out where this journey will take me. I feel truly privileged to join the reputable school in 2021 and to continue my professional development alongside talented teachers at BSB Shunyi.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing badminton, reading or watching movies. I have a black belt in Martial Arts (Tae Kwon Do) and look forward to challenging myself to learn Kung Fu! I also have a passion for drawing and painting and hope to learn how to paint traditional Chinese paintings. I am sure there will be ample opportunities to try out new sports and activities in Beijing, and of course to master Mandarin too!

Brandon Venketagadu
Year 1 Teacher
Working at an international school has given me endless possibilities to extend, broaden and  explore the minds of students. I have been teaching for the past seven years and it has been incredible thus far.
Brandon Venketagadu

BEd,. PGCE

I graduated from the University of South Africa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (BEd), specialising in English and Math. I also received my Postgraduate degree at the same university majoring in Educational Management.

I thoroughly enjoy working with children and seeing their growth and development makes me extremely happy. Throughout my teaching career, I wanted to develop my skills to become a better teacher so that I will be able to enrich my students with more knowledge daily. It is my belief that each child can accomplish all of their dreams if someone believes in them and if they believe in themselves. I wish that one day I would be a principal and have my own school so that I will be able to break the system of poverty through education. Thus, education is extremely important and dear to me. I would love to see many people become successful through a dynamic education system that works for all and targets all age groups.

Working at an international school has given me endless possibilities to extend, broaden and  explore the minds of students. I have been teaching for the past seven years and it has been incredible thus far. I have achieved so much in terms of experience and I have developed myself internally and externally. It has been rewarding and I am immensely proud of all the achievements. BSB Shunyi is rated one of the very best and top schools in Beijing and I will use this platform to share my knowledge and also learn more in order to develop myself further.

I always knew that I wanted to teach abroad and travel the world. One of the best decisions of my life was making the choice to work in China. Life in China is amazing. From learning how to make dumplings, eating at my favorite Chinese restaurants and traveling to cities such as Shenzhen and Harbin and many more, I am amazed and astonished at the life in China and the way things are done. I enjoy making new friends, traveling to different countries and exploring different cities and experiencing different cultures. One of my interests is cooking and entertaining friends. I love to inspire people to be the best that they can be and to aspire to become a great leader  in the future.

I have always felt that it is the most wonderful feeling to be able to assist someone in acquiring new knowledge and skills and watch them develop and grow as a person and individual.
Kieran Sear

MEd, PGCE, TEFL

I first became passionate about teaching when I was working through my coaching qualifications in football and hockey while studying in University. I have spent over a decade working in education, the majority of which has been spent with second language learners in China. I have always felt that it is the most wonderful feeling to be able to assist someone in acquiring new knowledge and skills and watch them develop and grow as a person and individual.

With my interest in education and passion for learning, I made the decision to study for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and continued my studies to obtain a Master's degree in Education Management and Leadership, both from the University of Buckingham. I have also completed the Bridge TEFL. I feel honored to have the opportunity to join BSB in 2021 as working in such an inclusive and supportive environment will allow me to continue to develop myself as an educator and leader.

I have been married for the past 7 years and have 2 daughters who are also attending BSB. I aspire to be the best I can be and support the learning for all my students and hope that I can inspire them to become the best versions of themselves. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family as well as playing football and long distance running.

I decided to move to China in 2016 where initially I taught English in Kindergarten and also provided after school tutoring for students from 2 years of age to 14 years of age. Next I taught various age groups in bi-lingual schools in Beijing.

I have spent the first part of last year in Taiwan completing my PGCE from University of East London. I worked in an international school as a Teaching Assistant initially. Once qualified, I taught regular lessons in core subjects from Years 1 – 6 for the majority of the school year. I am extremely excited to join the BSB family in 2021 and can't wait to meet my new class.

During my time in Asia I have been lucky enough to visit some amazing places and there is nothing I enjoy more than exploring different countries. In my spare time I love watching movies and walking my 2 dogs.

Tom White
Year 2 Teacher
I've taught at a secondary school for children with autism in U.K. and since arriving China in 2017, have taught in training centres, public primary schools, international schools and kindergartens.
Tom White

BA (Hons) Education and English

I graduated from Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln in 2016 with a BA Honours in Education and English and I’m from Lincoln, Lincolnshire in England. I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a teacher. I love helping the people around me learn and master something new.

I have experience in many different types of educational environments. I returned to my former Primary school, Bicker Preparatory School, to experience teaching in a private Primary school. I have also worked in Primary schools in a deprived area, for children with autism, and state secondary schools. During my time at university, I used my summer vacations to gain teaching experience. I went to America and taught archery, riflery, football, tennis and swimming to young children at a camp in North Carolina. I was a friend, mentor, and carer for many sets of young children.

After graduating, I went to France and taught archery, orientation and low ropes to Primary school students. I then taught at a secondary school for children with autism in Spalding, U.K. I received the offer to work in China in the spring of 2017. Since arriving in China, I have taught in training centres, public primary schools, international schools and kindergartens.

I love football. I play for a team in Beijing called Beijing Spirit. This is where I have met most of my best friends. I love West Ham and Lincoln City and in my personal opinion, they are the best football teams in the world. I am a big fan of running. I love running 5K or 10K. I love political thrillers - Darkest Hour and Argo are two of my favourite movies. I can speak a little bit of French and German, but to be honest, I'm out of practice! I am somewhat conversational in Mandarin Chinese and I am studying to pass the HSK 3 test.

I am thrilled to be joining BSB as it is such a prestigious and outstanding school. I'm really looking forward to getting started in August 2022.

Chris Taylor

BSc (Hons), QTS, CELTA

I studied at the University of Manchester in the UK and was awarded an Bachelor's degree with honours in Management. I am licensed to teach in both the UK and USA and have been teaching in China from 2011. I also have a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) from the University of Cambridge. When I arrived in Beijing, I taught English as a language initially and worked with a wide range of ages from three up to twelve years old. I then moved to teaching all subjects in a Primary classroom and was promoted to supervisor and then manager in charge of curriculum program development. In my last school I was year level leader for both Year 2 and Year 3.

As a teacher, I believe in setting clear expectations and routines. Learning should develop skills as well as knowledge, promote problem solving and encourage students’ natural curiosity. One of the key reasons I was drawn to BSB Shunyi is the high standards of learning and teaching. I know that this is a school where I will be able to improve my teaching practice, develop my leadership skills and help students achieve their goals.

I have lived in China for the last ten years and speak the language fairly well. My wife and I were married here in 2019. In my spare time I like to read more about education, health and history. Apart from that, I tend to read a lot of novels at weekends and during holidays. I like to play football and go to the gym regularly.

Stephen Casey
Year 3 Teacher, Global Campus Primary Leaders
I qualified as a teacher in 1995 and has taught primary students in the UK and Canada before coming to China in 2002. Since then, I've taught English at Qingdao Ocean University and international schools in Shanghai and Beijing.
Stephen Casey

BEd.

I joined BSB Shunyi in August 2015. I come from Leeds in the North of England and completed my Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Edinburgh. We had a wonderful college campus on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh just down the old cobbled street from the famous castle.

I qualified as a teacher in 1995 and began teaching in my hometown, Leeds. Strangely enough my first teaching position was as a year 4 teacher at my local primary school. I actually used to play on the same school fields as a ten year old! During that time I qualified as an FA soccer coach and became involved in coaching at under 11 level. I have also taught in various schools in West Yorkshire for 7 years, gradually building experience across the primary school age range.

In 2000, I taught children from all over the world in Alberta, Canada for the whole summer.  I then went on to teach in the same summer camp in the Rocky Mountains for the next 9 summers. It was during one of the trips that I decided to travel and teach. I arrived in Qingdao, China in September 2002 and taught English at the Ocean University.  This gave me my love of China and Chinese culture. After returning to the UK I began to miss China. So in 2006 I returned to Beijing and taught Year 6 for the next 6 years.  After a brief spell at an international school in Shanghai, I returned to Beijing and have since been a Year 3 teacher.

I have a daughter who was born in Beijing who attends BSB. My wife is Chinese and is a High school teacher. She has a Masters degree in Chinese Literature but still feels I’m her most difficult student to date as she tries to teach me the intricacies of the Chinese language.

Jacquetta Fennell
Year 3 Teacher
I've taught all subject areas to Years 2 and 3 at an international bilingual school for the past three years. BSB Shunyi will be my second international school placement in China, and I'm excited to be joining in 2022!
Jacquetta Fennell

BA, TESOL

I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013. Before graduating, I developed an interest in education through my classwork with the Auckland Art Museum, where I wrote lesson plans for field trips and my work as a clarinet and music tutor for kids who couldn't afford music lessons. After I graduated from university, I was granted a scholarship to teach ESL in rural South Korea by the Ministry of Education and the National Institute for International Education Development. After teaching in South Korea for almost two years, I came to Beijing, China in 2015. I spent my first five years teaching ESL in training centers to students ages 3 to 18. During this time, I completed my Certificate in TESOL through Trinity College of London. I also took several teaching knowledge tests through Cambridge in various subject areas such as young learners and content and language integrated learning.

I've taught all subject areas to Years 2 and 3 at an international bilingual school for the past three years. BSB Shunyi will be my second international school placement in China, and I'm excited to be joining. As a teacher, BSB Shunyi appeals to me for its high quality of teaching and learning. I love putting smiles on my students' faces and teaching them to love learning. As I continue my teaching career at BSB, I aspire to grow in teaching ability and meet my educational and professional goals.

Since I was a little girl, I've loved playing music. I played classical and jazz clarinet for about 15 years, and I've also taught myself to play Ukulele as a hobby during university. Aside from music, I love cooking, baking, and traveling. I'm known for baking treats like macarons, cupcakes, and brownies and sharing them with my friends. Although I haven't been able to travel much in recent years, I love visiting new places and experiencing the culture and the food, and I'm looking forward to when it is possible to do this again.

Vivian Wei

BEd.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree in Primary Teaching from the University of Canberra, Australia. With eight years of Primary school teaching experience in Australia, I believe I have grown into a highly competent educator, confidently planning and delivering well-structured, differentiated teaching programmes catering for individual learning needs. In my teaching career, I have acquired a wide range of well-developed professional knowledge and teaching skills. I have taught in classrooms from kindergarten (3 years old) to Year 6 in Canberra, Australia, including students from the Learning Support Unit and Gifted and Talented classes, where I adjust my pedagogy to address a particularly large range of students’ abilities. These past experiences will enable me to successfully teach at The British School of Beijing, Shunyi.

I am committed to giving children positive, rewarding experiences in their early years of schooling. These positive moments will set children up to be life-long learners. I feel that I have the capabilities to motivate, excite and stimulate the students in my care in a developmentally appropriate and safe environment. I am confident that my varied teaching experiences will be an asset to the British School of Beijing, Shunyi.

I am passionate about gardening and exploring nature. Making compost with kitchen waste,  adding healthy soil to gardens and plant pots, growing organic vegetables and herbs all year round, giving them to my neighbours, colleagues and friends, sharing ideas about sustainability; thinking how similar these are to teaching and looking after children always make me so happy. Walking about in natural environments and appreciating their beauty are my other hobbies. They help with maintaining a positive mindset and nurturing my hope for the world. I am married with a young son who will attend BSB Shunyi.

Farrah Sassani

BA (hons), iPGCE, TEFL

I graduated with a BA (hons) in French from University of Leeds in the UK and also have a Teaching English as a foreign Language (TEFL) certificate. I have also completed the iPGCE with the University of Derby, also in the UK. I had my first experience of teaching abroad during my undergraduate degree at a school in an underprivileged area of France.  I enjoyed being able to make such a big impact in these students’ lives and their learning.  After graduating, this experience led me to working as a teaching assistant in both primary and secondary schools in my hometown of Cambridge. Working as both a classroom assistant and a one-to-one assistant for students with additional needs gave me an invaluable insight and knowledge into both classroom management and inclusion strategies.

After arriving in Beijing in 2014, I worked as a homeroom teacher in a bilingual school. Since being in Beijing, it has been my dream to work at BSB Shunyi, because of their amazing ethos and wonderful school environment.  The colleagues made me feel so welcome and supported, and the students impressed me so much, both their positive energy for learning and the real team spirit I saw throughout the different year groups.  I knew then that BSB Shunyi was a school where I could spend many happy years and grow and progress in my teaching career.  I was thrilled join as a full-time class teacher in 2022 August.

Each child has their own special talents and unique dreams. I believe that as a teacher it is my job to create a platform for children to discover these outstanding talents and skills within them. I like to remind students of the powerful quote, ‘the expert in anything was once a beginner.’ As adults we remember the teachers who unlocked that potential.

Outside of the classroom, you may find me at the swimming pool with my daughter, at a trampoline park or doing some home baking. We love hosting parties and cooking dinners for our friends. When she is a little bit older, I hope to share my love of travelling with her.  There’s so much more of China and the world for us to explore!

In 2016 I moved to Beijing to teach, and to undertake a position as ‘Academic Supervisor’ in a school that focused on supporting children and adults who were EAL learners. During my time in Beijing, I had become very aware of the high reputation that The British School of Beijing Shunyi held, and decided that I would like to continue my teaching career there. I am very excited to begin my new chapter at BSB Shunyi in 2020.

I am blessed with many hobbies and interests. For example reading, film and cooking (as well as a slight obsession with Harry Potter). Another one of my interests is sport. Amanda Thorp
Year 5 Teacher
I joined BSB in 2017 working first in Early Years, then as a Year 2 Teacher. I desire to be a primary class teacher so I could be a part of ensuring that each child’s individual potential is unlocked and realised.
Amanda Thorp

BSc, B Arch, TEFL, PGCEi

Since graduating from Dundee University, Scotland, with both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Architecture degrees, I have worked extensively with children, primarily through my passion for swimming. Alongside a 20 year career in construction, I devoted the majority of evenings and weekends to teaching and coaching swimming, from early years up to adulthood, with coaching roles both at regional and national level as part of English Schools Swimming in the UK.

Following two years living in Bangkok, Thailand, I joined BSB in September 2017 and gained my TEFL certification, working first in Early Years, then in Year 4 and Year 5 (SEN). My experience confirmed my desire to be a primary class teacher, so I could be a part of ensuring that each child’s individual potential is unlocked and realised. This led to the undertaking of my PGCEi teaching qualification, which has now enabled me to join the teaching team.  I am very excited about my new role and looking forward to my future in teaching, here at BSB.

I live here in Beijing with my husband, son and daughter, who are also all at BSB. The school is an integral part of our lives, as we all make the most of the many opportunities on offer here. There is rarely a weekend when we are not in school for something. Outside of school, I love cooking with my daughter and playing board games with my family. I particularly love to travel and still have a passion for architecture, so I never miss an opportunity to visit new places.

My focus at the University of Washington was creative writing and I wanted to be a writer. I was a part of the Seattle Poetry Slam and self-published a book of poetry. After graduating with a BA in English from the University of Washington, I did some travelling and taught English in South Korea. I fell in love with teaching while there, so I decided to go back to school to get my Master’s degree in Education from Colorado State University (Global), USA.  While in Korea, I was able to help create an award winning speech program, the most popular after school class using Minecraft as a learning tool, and learn design skills that help me create my own lessons and education materials I use in my class.

After teaching in Korea for ten years, I moved to Kuwait for the last two years teaching Year 5, getting valuable experience as a homeroom teacher as well as understanding and experiencing a new culture and part of the world. I am excited to join BSB Shunyi in August 2022 teaching Year 5 and living and working in China. I look forward to being not just an educator, but a learner myself in a new location and with great new people to get to know and learn from as part of my new community.

I am an avid reader and love to challenge myself by reading new and different stories from around the world. I am a photographer that focuses on street photography and portraiture. I also love to travel. This world is a large and beautiful place and I want to see and experience as much as I can. I have also been practising martial arts for the last 15 years. Finally, ever since I was a child and received my first NES system, I have been playing video games and have even been working on introducing them into the educational world more and more. What I find the most exciting, though, is that there are still hobbies I have yet to be introduced to that may be added to this list in the future, and I certainly hope that happens.

James Cox
Year 6 Teacher
I received my iPGCE (Distinction) from the University of Sheffield and has experience teaching at a local university in Jinan, a young learners training centre and several years as homeroom teachers in a bilingual school in Beijing.
James Cox

BA (Hons), iPGCE

Shortly after graduating with a BA (Hons) in Philosophy from Lancaster University, I decided I’d like to try my hand at teaching overseas. I began my teaching career in Jinan, Shandong, where I worked as an ESL teacher for a local university. Coming from a family of teachers, it didn’t take long for me feel comfortable in the classroom.

In order gain a greater insight into pedagogy related to younger learners, I chose to transition from teaching at university to a young learners training centre. Within a year, I was promoted to Head of Foreign Department where I led a team international teachers, delivered training and assisted leadership with decision making. During this time, I was invited to work for a bilingual school in Beijing on the condition I could simultaneously study a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (International). I eventually received my iPGCE (Distinction) from the University of Sheffield. After several years of experience working as a homeroom teacher in the capital, I decided to aim for a job at BSB Shunyi, a school which values the importance of rigor and the whole child in education.

I consider myself a kind and compassionate person who relishes new challenges and self-development. I enjoy travelling and experiencing new cultures, as I believe there is much to gain from exchanging perspectives. I have a particularly keen interest in Chinese culture, a driving factor to teaching myself Mandarin Chinese (albeit to a conversational level), which helped me better assimilate into my surroundings. Aside from travel, I also enjoy hiking, badminton, open discussion and science fiction movies.

Year 6 Teacher
I have a BA Joint Honours in English Language and Journalism from the University of Worcester and a postgraduate degree in Primary Education from the University of Birmingham.
Thomas Brown

BA (Hons) PGCE

I have a BA Joint Honours in English Language and Journalism from the University of Worcester and a postgraduate degree in Primary Education from the University of Birmingham. Although I qualified in 2016, I have been volunteering in schools as early as 2009, where I discovered teaching as my passion. I was quickly inspired by those around me to pursue a career in education, and have continued to meet and work alongside such influential people since teaching at Peters Hill Primary School in the West Midlands. There, I gained experience in working in a large primary school setting, as the school hosts over nine hundred students, from Nursery up to Year 6. I thrived in the school’s atmosphere and enjoyed the camaraderie between staff members, as well as the community that a larger school can foster. After a couple of years, I became Pupil Premium Lead, focusing on how we enabled disadvantaged children to receive an enriched and fulfilling curriculum both inside and outside of school.

After a wonderful four years, I decided it was time to pursue a career teaching abroad, something I have wanted to do since qualifying. Much searching lead me to the BSB Shunyi website, where the ambitious and passionate aims and ethos presented were enough to convince me that this was the school and community I wanted to be part of. I eagerly look forward to developing my teaching practice, being offered brand new opportunities and having the privilege of working in such a diverse and inspiriting school in 2020.

I am a lover of film and theatre but my true passion lies with food, both cooking and eating! I am eagerly looking forward to trying some of the cuisine Beijing and the rest of China have to offer, as well as hopefully partake in some Chinese cooking myself. I am often found trying to invite friends over as an excuse to cook for them during a weekend, though I won’t quote them on the quality of my culinary skills!  I enjoy exercising and am an avid runner, taking part in half marathons and hoping to one day complete a full marathon. I do, however, enjoy slowing down for a walk too! Tennis is my sporting passion and it has always been my dream to one day attend the Wimbledon finals. Hopefully my career at BSB and a life in China will assist me in finding brand new passions and opportunities.

Before joining BSB, I taught Chinese to both native and non-native speakers across different age groups in kindergarten and primary school for 8 years. The teaching experiences and skills made me feel confidence with different personality characters of children as well.  I made the right decision for my career because I love children and early childhood education.

I am easy going with a pleasant mature attitude, strong sense of responsibility and have good relationship with colleagues. I enjoy sharing ideas with others. It is a good for all of us. Rugera Wanjara
Primary Computing Leader
I took my PGCE at Roehampton University London in 2006 and taught in the UK for 10 years. Then I completed specialist Computer Science teaching courses at King's College London and taught in Tanzania for 3 years.
Rugera Wanjara

BA, MA. PGCE

Both my parents were teachers, and I looked at their profession with deep admiration. Clearly, nothing gave them more pleasure than seeing and discussing about how they will have touched and changed young people’s lives for the better through their work. As a result of this inspiration, at an early age, I knew that teaching will be on top of the list of my life career options.

After completing my degree in Theology, I worked briefly as a pastor before I went for postgraduate theological studies at Friedensau University in Germany and University of Wales in the UK. Thereafter I took my PGCE at Roehampton University London in 2006. In 2007 I joined the Philosophy and Religious Education department at Blessed Hugh Faringdon School in Reading UK, where I remained for the following 10 years. During this time, I profoundly grew up professionally - from a timid Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) to a confident and successful Head of Department.

Because of my love for digital technology and the very evident advanced IT skills I displayed, I was progressively asked to teach more and more IT/ICT/CS classes over the years. I eventually found myself taking specialist Computer Science teaching courses at Kings College London and attended numerous CPDs run by different organization, more especially CAS.  I left Blessed Hugh Faringdon in 2016 for teaching Computer Science at St Constantine’s International School in Arusha Tanzania.

After three years in Tanzania, I decided to accept a rare privilege of being a part of a clearly world-class international school. Teaching at BSB is dream come true and we as a family take this privilege very seriously. Michael, Isabelle and I are deeply proud of being part of the Be Ambitious philosophy.

Outside of work my main passion is travelling, making new friends and spending time with my family. I also enjoy being involved in community service in any way. We are looking forward to many wonderfully years of service at a great school, in a great country with great people.

Rebecca Wykes
Primary PE Teacher
I believe that every child should be given the opportunity to do their best. I aim to provide an environment in which they are happy to have a go and take a risk, supporting them in the choices they make.
Rebecca Wykes

BA Ed (Hons)

I was fortunate in that I knew I wanted to be a teacher so when I studied at Durham University I did a four year teaching degree, (BA Ed. Hons). I then taught for two years in the UK before I began my travels overseas. I worked in three international schools in Kuwait before I arrived in Beijing in August 2010. I have taught children from Pre Nursery, right up to Year 9; covering all areas of the curriculum. BSB was the right place for me to join in 2013. The ethos of the school, the family feel was not only something I wanted to be a part of but also something I wanted my children to have an experience of.

I believe that every child should be given the opportunity to do their best. I aim to provide an environment in which they are happy to have a go and take a risk, supporting them in the choices they make. As part of the PE department, I am in an environment where the children can take risks, develop their physical skills and learn the importance of exercise and healthy living.

I live here in Beijing with two of my three children. My eldest has just begun studying in the UK at Keele University, whilst my other two children are in the Secondary school. I really believe that they are extremely privileged to be here and living in China, making friends with children from all over the world. They are truly citizens of the world. They speak Chinese well, much better than me, whilst receiving an excellent education.

When I am not at school or at home with my children, you will find me at my second home Crossfit 86. I train each morning before school and at the weekends. My love of exercise extends into all areas of my life; school and home. My girls have also started Crossfit for teens and my son plays football, basketball and works out in the gym. Exercise is important to all of us. We have many friends here and spend time with them. Friends become family and there is a great family feel at BSB which makes living here a truly unique experience.

In 2015 my family and I decided to move to Bangkok and for the last two years was Head Swim Coach at Bangkok Patana School.

I am a qualified Swim Coach and also hold coaching qualifications in many other sports. My specialist area is Aquatics having represented GB U17 and England U19, and swam the Olympic Trials in ‘88 as an athlete. During my career I have coached the English Schools National Swim Team at three World Schools and numerous European Schools events, as well as working with a number of National and International standard Youth Age athletes in both the UK and Thailand. I am looking forward to working with the students here at BSB to further develop the Aquatics programme and team at the school, and work in the PE department.

I joined BSB in August 2017 and my wife and two children have since enjoyed living here in Beijing and being part of the BSB community. As a family we have enjoyed travelling to many countries in SE Asia and hope to enjoy a few more in Asia in the future.

I enjoy all aspects of sport including cycling, swimming, watching live sport and trying to attend major sporting tournaments when time allows. Going to the London Olympics and Glasgow Commonwealth Games to watch the events was inspiring. I have taken part in a few triathlons and would like to try to do a few more if possible. I enjoy watching movies, eating out at restaurants and going to concerts as well.

Izabela Piotrowska
Music teacher
In my work as music teacher I pay close attention to develop students’ vocal skills. This is a perfect way to build pupils’ self-esteem and support their creativity.
Izabela Piotrowska

MA  Musicology

I am a Musicologist and a music teacher from Poland. I did my MA degree on  Cardinal Wyszynski University in Warsaw. There I covered the 1st and 2nd grade State Music School course in viola studies as well. For the last two years, I was Music and Drama teacher in an IB Primary School in Beijing.

My professional career has always been linked to music. I acquired my experience at Polish Radio, as a classroom, vocal and instrument music teacher (violin and piano), violist of a string quartet and singer in choirs and diverse vocal ensembles. With one of the ensembles, Clamaverunt Iusti performing Gregorian chant, I have received a prestigious Fryderyk award (being called Polish Grammy) in Early Music category.

In my work as music teacher I pay close attention to develop students’ vocal skills. This is a perfect way to build pupils’ self-esteem and support their creativity. Also it is really fascinating to see students transformed from knowing nothing about how to play an instrument to being able to perform complicated (for them) music by the end of the year. Inspiring them not only academically but personally.

I’m really exited to be a part of Music Department Team in BSB since 2020!

Tomasz Piotrowski
Music Teacher
My priority is to develop and support pupils’ creativity by combining formal and informal teaching. I try to build bridges between past and present particularly with regards to Contemporary music and pop.

I gained my teaching experience working in a primary school in Warsaw where I fulfilled the role of a Cultural Education Coordinator and a Leader of The School Gifted Support Teachers’ Team.

The priority of my work is to develop and support pupils’ creativity by combining formal and informal teaching. I try to build bridges between past and present, showing the consistencies in different epochs and styles, particularly with regard to Contemporary music and pop.

I get a lot of satisfaction from the creative work in the music recording studio. My leisure time activities involve bike rides and football.

My teaching career began about 19 years ago after graduating with distinctions in Mathematics and Natural Science from Springfield College of Education in Durban, South Africa. I taught  Senior Primary Math & Science in South African Public Schools for a period of 3 Years, thereafter securing myself a KS3 & KS4 Math & Science teaching post at a comprehensive high school in Surrey, England.

During my time in England, I also completed my BSc (Open) Degree major in Animal Physiology and Infectious Diseases and had the opportunity to complete my practical component at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.  After 5 years of working in England, my family and I returned to South Africa where I taught for a further 5 years. In 2013 , my husband and I moved to Suzhou, China where I taught IGCSE & A-Level Biology and IGCSE & As-Level  Math at an International High School catering for Chinese students aiming to study at top Universities abroad.

I consider myself to be a truly  International Teacher having taught such diverse group of students and different curriculae, the CAIE Curriculum is the one which I’m most experienced at. At this juncture in my teaching career, I wish to further my teaching experience in IB. Teaching at BSB Shunyi in 2019 has afforded me the opportunity to gain valuable experience teaching the IB Curriculum and in turn, I will be able to use my wealth of teaching experience and knowledge to continue  ensuring  academic excellence in all students whom I will be teaching.

My teaching career has afforded the opportunity for my family and I to travel, live, school and work in 3 different continents of the World. My children are typically “third culture kids” and therefore as a parent and teacher, I am fully aware of the aspirations and challenges facing children who are away from their “motherland”. Travelling does afford one the opportunity to new experiences and I believe this is one of the things I’m most passionate about.

Since moving to China, I have become a proud father of two young children. I enjoy all sports, good foods, technology, travel, books, and time with family and our beloved dog. My perfect weekend involves a good balance between my professional and family roles.

I was delighted to have joined the BSB learning community in 2019 and thoroughly enjoy being a vital part of such an experienced and excellent team of English teachers.

Steven Luke
Higher Education Advisor, English Teacher
I came to China in 2014 and have taught IGCSE English, IBDP English B and English A Language and Literature. I joined BSB in 2020 because I was impressed by its culture of “Be Ambitious”.
Steven Luke

BA (Hons), PGCE, TESOL

I am from the UK and completed my Bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages in Newcastle University, and later earned my PGCE in Modern Languages teaching qualifications in Cheltenham and Nottingham. I worked in international schools in Russia and the UK before moving to China.

I came to China in 2014 and have taught IGCSE English, IBDP English B and English A Language and Literature. I came to BSB in 2020 because I was impressed by its culture of “Be Ambitious”. I enjoy challenging students with high-level, idiomatic and colloquial language.

I am here in China with my wife Charlotte - from Harbin – and my little daughter Annie. In my free time I am guitar mad. I play in a rock band, and I love building and customising guitars. My other passion is language. I speak Russian and French, and I hope to one day become a fluent Chinese speaker!

Mark Burnham
Head of Secondary EAL
I have been an EAL teacher for 15 years both here in China and in the UK. I joined BSB in 2014 and the school has given me the opportunity to further my experience of teaching some wonderful students.
Mark Burnham

BA (Hons), PGCE, TESOL

I have been an EAL teacher for 15 years both here in China and in the UK. Before coming to China, I taught at Sheffield Hallam University and then came to China to manage an English programme here in the capital. I have extensive experience teaching in both high school and university and have run a number of teacher training sessions.

I began teaching at BSB in March 2014 and have loved every minute of my time here. The school has given me the opportunity to further my experience of teaching some wonderful students and my qualifications as an examiner for a number of Cambridge University examinations has been well used at the school.

I have a BA (Hons) in Fine Art - Upper Second from Sheffield Hallam University, TESOL Certificate from Trinity College London, Post Graduate Certificate in TESOL from Sheffield Hallam University, Cambridge Main Suite Examiner and Cambridge English - Train the Teacher Certificate.

As a parent of two young children, I have lots of fun biking, hiking and cooking. I also play the guitar and have performed locally in a band. I like to go jogging whenever I get chance, especially in the Olympic Park in Beijing which has a great running track and some difficult climbs (and also plenty of kiosks selling ice cream).

What the students say:

  • ‘Mr Burnham sometimes lets us become the teacher and use the electronic whiteboard during class.’
  • ‘I like some of the quizzes and competitions we do in teams.’
  • ‘I feel more confident about speaking English in other lessons now.’

In EAL class, we help give students the confidence and ability to face academic and social challenges by allowing them to take control of their learning. This means making innovative and exciting lessons and tasks where students take the lead. We use a variety of peer led activities, making sure that all students play an important role in the class, regardless of language ability. BSB gives students the confidence to take what they have learned into mainstream lessons and academic areas which they previously found very challenging. In EAL students are encouraged to realise how important they are to the school and how vital their views and opinions are. Our students can hold their heads up high and become valuable members of the school and wider community.

Andy Sheridan
Secondary EAL Teacher
I joined BSB in 2013 and enjoyed being part of the dynamic EAL team getting the language levels of our students up so that they can fully function in the learning environment that BSB has to offer.
Andy Sheridan

BA, TESOL

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in English & History at Bedfordshire University, UK, I became qualified as an English as a Second Language teacher (TESOL from Trinity College London) and moved to China in 1997. I worked as a volunteer teacher trainer for three years in Jiangxi Province, followed by three years on the Tibetan Plateau, before settling down in Beijing. In addition to teaching English I worked for the British Council for over 4 years in the English Examinations field, before returning full time to teaching again at BSB Shunyi in 2013.  I am also a Cambridge Main Suite Speaking Examiner, Cambridge Main Suite Speaking Examiner Trainer and Cambridge Main Suite Team Leader, Beijing.

My son has been a student at the Shunyi campus since he was very small, and he convinced me to join him here! I’m enjoying being part of the dynamic EAL team we have here and am very much looking forward to getting the language levels of our students up so that they can fully function in the learning environment that the Shunyi campus has to offer.

I have been in China for 16 years already, and still haven’t got bored yet! My son and I do quite a bit of hiking on the weekends and we like to travel as much as we can. I enjoy watching TV, socialising and warm weather, whenever I can get it, and I have just taken up golf (not as easy as it looks). My immediate family are spread out around the world, from the UK, the US, Spain, Egypt, and myself in China, so we’ve got the world pretty much covered.

What students say about me:

  • “Mr. Sheridan teaches us very nicely”
  • “He is always so happy and teaches every time with the funny way. He’s one of my favourite teachers”
  • “He is tall and thin. He looks like Woody in Toy Story” – That one made me laugh

At BSB Shunyi, we enable students to not only reach their own perceived potential but to go beyond what they imagine they can do. The language used in lessons could be seen as stumbling block for EAL learners, but this is where we started; to understand the concepts and language used . Our students started with breaking this down into their own languages, and defining what it means to them; they achieved this, they can achieve English language learning too.

Michael Mireku
Head of Humanties, Geography Teacher
I joined BSB in 2019 to explore and expose my children to a world of cultures and opportunities and to nurture and develop them into truly global citizens. BSB's multicultural student and staff composition has the perfect recipe!
Michael Mireku

BA (Hons), MSc, PGCE

I studied at the University of Ghana where I completed my BA (Hons) degree in Geography and Resource Development with Political Science. I then moved to the UK in 2001 where I did my MSc in Internet Technologies at the University of Bedfordshire, then followed by my PGCE major in Geography at the University of Hertfordshire. I have been teaching at secondary level since 2004 from KS3 through to KS5. Apart from Geography, I have also taught History, Politics, ICT and Global Perspectives at various levels.

In 2011 I took the middle leader's course at the National College for Teaching and Leadership to prepare me for middle leadership. I held the post of head of department for 5 years until I decided to move overseas to China to start my international teaching career in 2018. Once I moved to China, I took up the role of coordinator for my school's Somerset overseas educational programme that immersed students into cultural and bilingual experiences in the UK to broaden their understanding on the world around them.

I took the decision to move to China because I wanted to explore and expose my children to a world of cultures and opportunities and to nurture and develop them into truly global citizens. I joined BSB in 2019, my second international post in China. What attracts me the most to BSB, is the multicultural student and staff composition, a perfect recipe for true global learning.

In my spare time, I like to catch up with the latest news updates where I get ideas to bring the world into the classroom. I'm passionate about technology but also like to travel and go out with my family to explore local cuisine. I am married with two children who are both in BSB.

My hobbies include hiking, travelling, running and attending book reviews at the Book Worm in Beijing. During holidays I can usually be found travelling throughout Britain, Singapore and China. My wife Michelle (from Singapore) works as a teaching assistant in the BSB Primary School and we have two children, George and Jasmine, who are both in the BSB school.

I welcome any initiative, such as the Be Ambitious philosophy, that helps the students in their learning to achieve success and their full potential.

BA (Hons), PDE

I have a BA Honours Degree in History and Politics from University College Dublin and a Professional Diploma in Education from the National University of Ireland. I am currently studying for a  Master Degree in History from the University of Edinburgh. I am also an assistant examiner for the Cambridge IGCSE History exams.

I have been teaching internationally since I graduated in 2004. I have been teaching History and Global Perspectives in an international school in Bangkok, Thailand for 5 years. I was impressed and attracted to The British School of Beijing due to their ethos and philosophy of ‘Be ambitious’. I always tell my students to aim high and to be ambitious as the world needs effective Humanities students to influence, change and develop our future. I am grateful for the opportunity to join the Humanities Department in BSB Shunyi in 2020.

I am passionate about the importance of the Humanities as they teach students about the world we live in. Education is a vital element of young people’s lives and it is a privilege, as a teacher, to help them  develop their own skills and passions.

I am originally from Kildare in Ireland but I have spent most of the last 15 years living in Thailand. I really enjoy meeting  people from different countries and cultures. I also love tasting food from around the world and I can’t wait to start enjoying some authentic Chinese cuisine. My hobbies and interests range from  football, golf and travel, to reading and experiencing new cultures.  My family and I decided to move to Beijing to gain a more in depth knowledge of Chinese culture. We are really looking forward to joining the BSB community.

Voicu Mihnea Simandan
Psychology Teacher
I have been a teacher all my adult life and have also taught in Thailand, Qatar before moving to China in 2018. In parallel with my teaching duties, I help students thrive, develop resilience, and offer mental health support.
Voicu Mihnea Simandan

BA, MA, PGCE

I holds degrees and certifications across 3 disciplines. I received my BA in Philology and History from my home country in Romania. I hold a MA in English Language and Literature from Assumption University (Thailand) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Literacy and Learning from the University of Southern Queensland (Australia). I specialized in Positive Psychology at the Positive Psychology Center from University of Pennsylvania (USA) and is a Certified Positive Psychology & Mindfulness Practitioner and Coach. I am currently studying to become a mental health expert and is pursuing a MSc in the Psychology and Neuroscience of Mental Health at the Institute of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience from King’s College London (Class of 2023).

I have been a teacher all my adult life. I started teaching straight out of Teacher’s College and I have been teaching internationally since 2002. Before moving to China in 2018, I taught in Thailand and Qatar. My teaching career followed my qualifications path. I taught English and American Literature for many years but then I switched to my second major and started teaching History. I especially enjoyed teaching Asian History. As I also had a background in educational psychology, in 2015 I decided to refocus my teaching interest on psychology and I have taught the AP and IB curricula in the international schools system ever since.

When the pandemic started I had just finished my certification in Positive Psychology and I immediately started implementing the scientific-based theory and concepts of positivity in my daily teaching. I soon realized that the mental wellbeing of students is often forgotten in favour of higher GPA, college application, and societal pressures. So, in parallel with my teaching duties, I initiated a Positivity Center in order to help students thrive, develop resilience, and offer mental health support. While discussing these projects with the leaders of BSB Shunyi, I realized that our vision with regards to teaching philosophy and the importance of the students’ mental wellbeing aligned perfectly.

As a former competitive archer who has participated in many international archery competitions (including the Archery World Cup in Shanghai, the Indoor Archery World Cup in Singapore, and the Asian Archery Grand Prix in Bangkok), I am highly interested how mindset influences peak performance in sports. I hope to open an archery club at BSB Shunyi and impart with the students the awesome sport and art of archery. One of my other interests is survival psychology and calisthenics. During my free time, I’m engaged in an auto-ethnographic project by studying Chinese calligraphy, ink wash painting, and playing the guqin.

I like running around Ritan Park, one of my favourite places in Beijing and reading. My new goals are completing the Great Wall Half-Marathon and improving my French language skills. I am now reading some Patrick Modiano’s books and rediscovering Leo Carax, Éric Rohmer and Kiéslowski’s old movies.

As a teacher, I have a strong passion for educating young people and encouraging and empowering students to develop into inquiring, knowledgeable and caring life-long learners who can impact the world in positive ways. I want to keep learning and growing with my students and colleagues at BSB Shunyi.

My biggest passions are playing music, dancing, and reading various books. Another big passion of mine is language. I speak five languages: Korean, English, Chinese, Russian, and Mongolian. If time allows, I want to learn Spanish in the future.

Henry Mendez
French & Spanish Teacher
I have worked at international schools in Venezuela and Singapore, where I had the opportunity to teach students from different parts of the world and different cultural backgrounds.
Henry Mendez

BEd.

In 2009, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education of Foreign Languages from the University of Zulia in Venezuela. Since then, I have worked at international schools in Venezuela and Singapore, where I had the opportunity to work with students from different parts of the world and different cultural backgrounds. This has allowed me to grow as a teacher and a human being and has helped me gain new skills that I am very excited to share at BSB.

I am currently working on a Master’s degree in Special Education. I decided to get this degree because I believe all students have the ability to succeed academically if they have the right tools, so for me, it was extremely important to learn more about the different ways I can support every single student in my classroom, no matter their background or learning needs.

I am very happy to be joining BSB to contribute to this community. Personally, it is very exciting to work with this wonderful group of students and teachers and I hope to continue growing as a teacher during my time at BSB and help my students grow and learn more about languages and their cultural significance.

Li Jiang

Bachelor's degree in TCSL

I have been a Chinese teacher for many years.  I worked in ACC (Associated Colleges in China) for 5 years and in SYA (School Year Abroad) for 3 years and then in Phillips Academy Andover (a high school located in MA, USA).

I’m from Hubei Province, China. I have a Bachelor's degree major in the storage and transportation of petroleum (including water supply and drainage) from Jiangsu Institute of Petrochemical. I have a certificate and qualified to teach Chinese as a foreign language at an advanced level.

In 2010, I started to study Spanish as a beginner in China and in Argentina. Based on my experiences of being a language teacher,  I did this because I wanted to check if the methods I had told my students to use when learning a foreign language were efficient or not . During my study of Spanish as a beginner, I confirmed that most of them were good methods.

I joined BSB in 2016. This is my first time working in a British school.  I’m glad to have the chance and take on this challenge.

I think I’m outgoing and open-minded and I hope I can give you the same impression. In my spare time, I like reading, listening music. During my vacation, I like hiking and traveling with my friends and family. I enjoy teaching languages. I’m so excited to have the opportunity to work at BSB Shunyi.

I am very grateful to be part of BSB, and looking forward to learn and grow together with the team.

I enjoy sports as a spectator for many years, but am planning to catch up with a few of my long lost favourite sports if possible upcoming years; besides pursuing my actuarial exams from SOA. I also enjoy theatre performance both as an audience and a participant (my last performance was almost 10 years ago). Anyway, now I am a father of a lovely girl and a husband of a wonderful wife; spending time with family has been my first priority past few years. In my teaching, I motivate the learners to actively examine and extend their thinking, shape a conversational environment in which students share and construct their own knowledge, design instructions that enable students to learn by doing, apply technology to improve teaching and learning, apply appropriate differentiation techniques and EAL strategies to ensure all my students across the ability spectrum access the curriculum and make learning process an enjoyable venture.

My wife, Annet and I together with our two children, Felix and Sylviah  like travelling and watching movies together. Moreover, I like scientific explorations and community and service.

Rebecca Wykes
PE Teacher

Paul Sullivan

BPA

I grew up in New Zealand with six siblings in a family that loved theatre. My parents took us to see many shows and as kids we would often create our own plays to perform at home. I loved the magic that could be created from pulling together a few props and one’s imagination.

Many years later I graduated with a Bachelor in Performing Arts from National Academy of Singing in Dramatic Art, New Zealand. I worked in the industry in New Zealand as an actor, improvisor and director, and taught High School Drama for seven years. I also graduated from Christchurch College of Education, New Zealand and received my Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) from Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand.

I have been teaching at International Schools for ten years across Egypt, Vietnam and China. I’m pleased to be an ISTA (International School Theatre Association) Artist and help run their HS and MS festivals. I am excited to join The British School of Beijing Shunyi in 2021 and look forward to empowering students to put their creative magic on stage.

Outside of the classroom, I like to exercise at the gym and am a keen traveler. I enjoy many sports such as rugby, scuba diving, hiking, skiing and daily meditation.

Doreen Dong

Doreen Dong

BA Art & Printmaking,  Double MA of Fine Art, Teacher licence

I am a professional art teacher and have five years’ experience teaching multiple grades in international schools.

I have acquired specialised academic training in the field of fine arts and education and completed both a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree at Tianjin Academy of Fine Art. After a few years of teaching in China, I completed a second Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Arts London.

As a practitioner, I specialise in sculpture and painting. In recent years I have expanded my work as an artist to include installations, photography, ceramics and fine art. My artwork focuses on personal experiences such as traditional culture, life and religion. I have always enjoyed creativity in all its forms, and I was fortunate enough to be able to explore my artistic curiosity throughout my education. I am also passionate about curating students’ artwork.  In my previous schools, I organised many successful art exhibitions and hosted art festivals. I have also worked on outreach within China to forge cooperation with local foundations, museums, art galleries and art institutions.

My educational philosophy is that each child is unique. As such, an important part of my job as an educator is to help students discover their individuality and to support them to realise their creative potential. I believe in hands-on experiential learning and encouraging unique learning engagements. I want my students to feel confident that they can apply what they’ve learned in art class to real-life situations. In addition, I want my students to develop an appreciation of the arts and to understand the reciprocal nature of engaging with creative processes.

Collaboration, cooperation, and open communication between home and school are key to building a strong foundation for a successful school year. I am proud and excited to be joining The British School of Beijing.

Irina Kayhodges

BA, MA

I have a Bachelor of Art Education and a Masters in Teacher Training for Secondary Schools in Visual Arts & Art Education, both from the Omsk State Pedagogical University, Russia.

From my earliest childhood years, I have always been fascinated by artistic processes. My love and passion for the arts resulted in my formal study which commenced when I was eleven years old following my acceptance into a specialist art school. Following my formal education, I worked extensively in industry including fashion and fashion publishing. My projects have been featured in Vogue as well as at the Moscow Fashion week. I have also created a clothing collection, under my own label, transferring splashes of watercolour into silk fabrics. Inspired by the clothing project, I published drawing and illustration tutorials in English and Chinese.

Learning always remained at the core of my work. Therefore, I continued my academic pursuits by completing a Master of Arts in Education with a specialism in Fine Arts. Additionally, I went on to develop my technique at Parsons College of Arts in Paris where I focused on experimental processes in contemporary art forms.

Originally from Siberia in Russia, I have lived in many different countries and fully embrace the principles of interculturalism and international mindedness. I lived in the heart of Europe, in the capital of Czech Republic for a decade, where I started to share my broad experience through teaching fashion, visual arts and design in international school. It is my third year in China and I am excited to live in its historical capital. I am honoured to join the British School of Beijing.

In my spare time I enjoy jogging, reading American and Russian classics and cooking. My specialty is pancakes. I love exploring China and its traditions with my three year old son Theo. As a parent I am thankful that my child is exposed to different cultures. As a teacher I believe in power of art as an essential tool for every child's self-expression and wellness, the development of empathy and multicultural consciousness.

Then in 2021, I went back to Austria to work part time at a school and study for my master’s degree at the same time, which I am about to complete hopefully this year. I’m glad to be back at BSB in August 2022 and I’m looking forward to the challenges that await me at BSB and in Beijing.

I grew up in Beijing during the late 80s and 90s when there were just a handful of international schools. Since returning from Europe and starting a family, I can truly call this city my home. Therefore, I delight in the students I meet who remind me of myself who might not yet be sure of where home is. I feel connected to them and somehow obliged to help them discover and fulfil their potential. I am also an Assistant Scuba Dive Instructor from PADI Asia Pacific.

I graduated from the „Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule“ Graz, Austria. Since then I have been working as a teacher and support teacher with young people in an institution in Graz. The main tasks were to support and guide the students with their learning and place them in an employment relationship. This included organizing internships in various fields, as well as teaching basic skills in mathematics, German, English and general knowledge to prepare them in the best possible way for their next step in life.

I have always wanted to work abroad to gain even deeper insights into different education and foreign cultures and it is a great honor for me to work at the British School of Beijing.
