Our curricula
Our ambitious knowledge-led curriculum; crafted by subject experts, ensures that all students develop a broad, deep subject expertise. Coupled with skills development throughout the various programmes of study, our students advance their creative thinking, analytical skills and communication.
We prioritise the core academic subjects which provide a firm basis for further study, understanding the world around us, and to ensure we lived fulfilled lives in the future. Pupils study English, Maths and Science, History and Geography, Computer Science and a language of their choice; French, Spanish or Chinese. Furthermore, students enjoy the creativity and physical challenge which Art, Music, Drama and Physical Education brings.
Our Intention is to ‘foster a love of learning’ whilst driving ‘excellence’ and ‘opportunity’.
Our curricula
Learning is divided into ‘Key Stage Four’ (KS4) for Years 10 and 11, and ‘Key Stage Five’ (KS5) for Years 12 and 13.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS(FAQS)
- I’m applying from overseas and my child can’t attend The British School of Guangzhou’s admissions assessment. What should we do?
No problem. Parents applying from overseas can send copies of their child’s latest academic transcripts (this typically only applies to children aged 6 and above). Depending on the information provided, we’ll respond in one of two ways:
- In exceptional circumstances, we’ll accept your child unconditionally. This outcome is limited to native English speakers with outstanding academic transcripts or references, normally from a school that follows the English National Curriculum.
- We’ll send you an online link to complete our assessment. Your child will sit their test in a controlled environment, either at their current school or at home. BSG may grant an admissions offer based on the test results.
- Can my child enrol at BSG at any time in the academic year?
- Yes, we accept students any time. We give special attention to new children to ensure they feel welcomed and integrated into their class.
- Is BSG's curriculum taught at BSG recognised by other international schools and universities?
Yes, BSG students follow the English National Curriculum, which is taught by the very best independent schools in the UK and around the world. To reflect the needs of our community – and our location in China – we’ve modified our curriculum slightly. However, students attending BSG will earn qualifications that are recognised and accepted by other British and international schools, as well as universities worldwide.
BSG is a member of the Nord Anglia Education family of international schools. We’re an active member of several reputable international school associations, too, such as COBIS (Council of British International Schools) and CIS (Council of International Schools). BSG is also fully licensed by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
Our SAT, IGCSE, and A-Level examinations are fully recognised and accredited by the same examination boards as other top private schools – both in the UK and internationally. These boards include the Cambridge University International Examination Board (CIE) and Edexcel.
- My child has very limited English. Can we still apply to BSG?
Yes, of course. We accept students of all backgrounds and nationalities, and our expert English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme will ensure they quickly get up to speed.
The level of English required, however, depends on the age group your child is joining. We are more selective from Year 10 onwards, as the curriculum requires a a student to be fully proficient in English. We can still support students with EAL needs, though, even during the process of preparing for IGCSE exams.
- How many hours of instruction in Mandarin do you offer each week?
BSG is committed to providing a strong Mandarin programme alongside the English National Curriculum.
We differentiate our Mandarin classes by levels of ability:- Years 1–3 receive four 40-minute lessons per week
- Years 4–6 receive three hours per week
- Secondary school students may opt to study either Mandarin or another language.
