Nurturing a Love for Science

Nurturing a Love for Science - Science

At the British School of Guangzhou, the love for science transcends age boundaries, evident from the remarkable learning experiences recently shared by students in Year 1, Year 2, and Year 7 classes. From the earliest years of primary education to secondary, we strive to create exciting and memorable learning experiences that foster curiosity and a deep appreciation for scientific exploration.

The young minds of Year 1-Kiwis have embarked on an enchanting journey into the life cycle of a humble bean. They have learned to identify various plant parts, have understood their function and considered the essential conditions required for plant growth. The Kiwis' classroom became an experimental haven as they planted bean seeds and diligently watered them each morning. Their dedication shone through as they cautioned one another against overwatering, ensuring the beans wouldn't "drown and die."

When the Kiwis returned to their classroom on Monday morning, what they discovered was the miracle of life – tall bean stems and intricate root systems had emerged. Amazing discussions followed about what had happened, and why, and as new children arrived at the classroom, their excited peers couldn’t wait to share their new understanding. This hands-on experiment served as a catalyst, igniting scientific curiosity within the Kiwi class, a testament to our school's commitment to fostering a love for science from an early age.

In Year 2, our young learners have been exploring the world through their senses. This interdisciplinary endeavour allowed them to delve into the five senses – sight, taste, smell, hearing, and touch. The classroom buzzed with anticipation as the children embarked on sensory tests for taste and smell. With blindfolds securely in place, they sampled four different items, exploring the boundaries of their sensory perception.

Meanwhile, in Year 7, a remarkable journey unfolded, one that would forever alter their perception of science. These budding scientists took a deep dive into the intricacies of the human heart, an organ as fascinating as it is vital. Through engaging lessons and hands-on experiences, they examined the heart's structure and function, unraveling the mysteries of an organ that beats within each of us. The pinnacle of their journey was the heart dissection, a rare opportunity to witness the inner workings of this incredible organ up close. This practical exercise not only honed their dissection skills but also deepened their appreciation for the heart's complexity.

At our school, we firmly believe that such experiences extend beyond traditional classrooms and textbooks. They instill curiosity, foster critical thinking, and ignite a lifelong passion for scientific exploration. While the heart dissection has concluded, the Year 7 students are eager to continue their scientific voyage. They will build upon this foundational knowledge, exploring more captivating topics in the realm of science. We encourage you as parents to engage with your children about their experiences, to ask them about the wonders of the science, and to let their enthusiasm for science enrich your conversations at home.

BSG students’ accomplishments are a testament to the thriving culture of science within our school, one that spans across all grade levels and instills a profound love for the subject. We eagerly anticipate the many more exhilarating learning adventures that lie ahead for our students.
