Recently we completed a ‘recce’ visit to Seeway, Tanzania during Golden week, while planning and building smokeless stoves.

While there, we found another worthwhile cause.  Many students who attend the Kitefu Primary School take their Standard 6 tests at the end of the year to see if they can graduate to Secondary school.   The schools have very little equipment that is required to take these tests and the cost usually falls on to the students to provide their own equipment.   As this is an important time in their schooling, we therefore decided on our return to see if we were able to enable at least the graduating year with their lack of equipment.   On further investigation we found out that the essential equipment that was needed was the following:

  • Protractors
  • Rulers
  • Pencils
  • Compasses
  • Erasers

On our return to China we looked at the possibility of providing a backpack that included all the necessary equipment needed for a student.  After more research we found that we could supply a backpack that would have all of the above but also include:  Exercise books, Toothbrush and Soap (other essentials that our NGO advised were in short supply).  We found we were able to bulk buy this equipment/resources and the cost would be RMB50 per backpack.

We campaigned in and around school for donations.  We were able to raise enough donations to assemble 100 bags, just enough for the Standard 6 year group.  After some strange looks in shops (buying 100 toothbrushes was a troublesome task!) we managed to pack each backpack for the students.  Donators also had the opportunity to write a tag that was a ‘good wish’ message to the student.  These were then attached to the bags.  All the students who received a backpack enjoyed looking at their “goodies” and the message that was written.   We hope this will help them with their end of year studies.
