Every week we are adding more and more music back into the school day, and Primary and Secondary students are all enjoying playing instruments in particular. While many students learn an instrument at home, the challenge is playing music together and developing ensemble skills. It takes a different set of skills to play in time and in tune with others.
All Year 9 students are learning band skills this unit, and we are excited to have the amazing IB Music class involved in coaching some of the Year 9 classes. The Year 13 IB Music students Tyler Adams-Brown, David Chen, Sebastian van der Merwe and Alex Liu have been playing in a band together for years, so the Year 9s will have the opportunity to work with these advanced students and learn from their expertise.
Year 9 students are putting together all the parts of a popular song – voice and instruments, such as guitar, piano and drums. The final outcome will be a group performance where each student is playing a part individually. The groups must work together to play the song, essentially creating their own band. We can’t wait to see what they come up with!
The Junior Orchestra, the Wind Band and the Secondary Orchestra are all back to rehearsing. This year the conductors are Mrs. Piotrowska for the Junior Orchestra, Mr. Leo Qu for the Junior Wind Band, and Mr. Piotrowski for the Secondary Orchestra. Students must have years of experience on the instrument and be able to read music independently to participate in these groups – such talented young musicians! It is wonderful to see how much they love to play together!
Please have a look at the photos of students doing amazing work and performing together!
