6 Questions With Shane Leaning

Meet Shane Leaning, one of our wonderfully talented EAL teachers at The British School of Guangzhou. His charismatic personality and ambition to make his lessons engaging and creative helps to nurture his students’ love of English.  We sat down with Shane for a quick interview about his experiences as an expat teacher living in Guangzhou.

  1. What was your first reaction when you first arrived in GZ?

My first reaction was a mix shock and amazement at how tall all the buildings were, especially as I come from a small town in the north of England where the tallest buildings are three or four storeys. For a good few weeks, my partner, Emma and I stayed within a one-block radius until we felt more confident to explore.

  1. Why did you become a teacher?

My biggest inspiration to become a teacher was an amazing teacher I had at school. I used to be painfully shy in Primary school and my Secondary music teacher really brought me out of myself. She gave me confidence and her trust in my ability inspired me to learn. That teacher made such a huge difference and if I can give my students half the inspiration she gave me I would be incredibly happy.

  1. What’s your favourite quote when it comes to education?

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try.”

This Dr. Seuss quote I think sums up wonderfully just how amazing children can be. Their imagination wows me every day. I whole-heartedly believe that if you give a child the space to be creative, they will do amazing things.

  1. Who was your hero when growing up?

My hero, perhaps embarrassingly was the TV presenter, Neil Buchanan who presented a children’s art show called ‘Art Attack’.  As a child I used to watch his show religiously and got so excited about all the things he made. I think my parents got a bit sick of just how much paper, glue and paint I went through as a result of that show. I wonder if they kept my creations…

  1. How does BSG compare to other schools?

I think I have a decent grasp of that within the Guangzhou community after having worked in 2 other schools locally. BSG has always stood out as a school where my past colleagues and I wanted to teach. The biggest thing about BSG is the professionalism. Everyone is really focused on making their lessons the best they can be and BSG’s focus on success and core values ensure that we are always providing a great education for all.

  1. Tell us something interesting about yourself?

I am a classical singer, singing and conducting the International Choir of Guangzhou. We are currently rehearsing for Christmas and hopefully can collaborate with BSGs wonderful choir in the future. Having a hobby outside of teaching helps me relax.
