U14 Football - Guangzhou Cup Champions!

The BSG Rhinos rampaged into action Tuesday evening, as they competed in the U14 Football GZ Cup finals. After slow starts to their respective seasons back in September, both boys and girls teams have been working hard on the training pitch, and after a string of impressive results, rightfully earned their place in the finals.

Report by Mr. Magson, Head of Secondary PE

The U14 boys faired off against rivals UISG, who had narrowly beaten them at the beginning of the season in a very tight encounter. The boys were quick off the mark, strong in the tackle and quickly asserted themselves in the match. Goal machine, Homan, capitalized on a defensive error to twist and turn past both goalkeeper and last defender before firing the Rhinos into an early lead.

The boys kicked on before the break as captain Adlan started to dominate midfield helped by tireless running from wide-man Alfred. The boys had to weather a storm of attacks in the second half as UISG were thwarted by some excellent interceptions and defending from Cedric and Samuel. Adlan thought he had won it for BSG as he smashed the post from outside the area, before Kayce pulled-off a stunning save at the other end, as UISG searched for an equalizer. However, there was soon to be no doubt. After a fine, flowing team move saw that man again, Homan, stab home the second in the final few minutes, wild celebrations sparked and the boys finished 2-0 winners!

There was also no shortage of drama in the girls’ final, as after a slow start, the Rhinos found themselves 2-1 down at half time to their opponents AISG. Adriana gave the girls a lifeline heading into half-time before Noemie continued her fine run of form in front of goal and fired BSG level at the beginning of the second half. The final whistle was blown and there was nothing to separate the two teams as we headed into extra time. Heavy legs, last ditch tackles and blocked shots were aplenty.

Bella, captaining the girls’ side and even suffering from cramp, was on hand to keep any further attacks at bay, as the game was drawn to a close with neither side able to find the winner. The nail-biting spectacle of a penalty shootout loomed. Sari came to BSG’s rescue early on, while Geneve, Noemie and Bella held their nerve from the spot, and when the final AISG taker blasted her spotkick over the crossbar, the pitch was invaded by a sea of navy and teal to complete a boys and girls cup double!

Mr Magson and Ms Heron would like to congratulate all players from both boys and girls teams for their hard work, commitment and togetherness this season. Both sides finished deserved U14 GZ Cup Winners.

Let’s Go Rhinos!
