Deputy Head of Secondary

BA (hons), PGCE

I am delighted to be joining BSG in August 2018 as the deputy head of secondary. I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BA in French and Business Studies, followed by a brief period training as a chartered accountant. I quickly realised that accountancy was not for me, and that my true calling was in teaching, with the opportunity to inspire, shape and develop young minds. I subsequently completed my PGCE in French and German at Manchester Metropolitan University.

After teaching in the UK for two years, my strong interest in the principles and values of international education, coupled with a desire to experience new and diverse cultures, led me abroad. I moved to a prestigious international school in Cairo, Egypt, where I joined as head of MFL, and when the opportunity arose for a position as head of key stage 4, I jumped at the chance. It was during this time that my passion for pastoral care really took hold, and ever since, I have been a strong advocate for student wellbeing and child-centred approaches to maximise student learning outcomes. I was subsequently promoted to deputy head, a post which I have held for the last five years.

During this time I worked on aspects such as student wellbeing and leadership, the wider curriculum, global citizenship, and enrichment through experiential learning which, for me, all contribute hugely to students’ personal growth, development and success. Positive mindsets and developing students’ creative and innovative thinking, alongside strong social skills, which allow them to demonstrate mutual respect, courtesy and kindness, no matter what their cultural context, are really important to me, as I believe that these factors will allow them to flourish in life beyond school.

I also like to lead by example as a lifelong learner, and recently passed my NPQH leadership qualification and an international schools’ accreditation award. I am always seeking further experiences, courses and roles to broaden my professional learning, and to share my knowledge with colleagues, and thus the move to BSG and the Nord Anglia group was an exciting opportunity not to be missed.
