After completing my degree and TESOL certificate, I started my teaching career in China 25 years ago teaching English to undergraduates in Jishou University, Hunan. After a wonderful 2 years, I moved back to England and gained a PGCE (specialism in teaching students with learning difficulties) from the University of Greenwich and met my now husband, Dean Bates, who is BSG’s Head of Psychology. Since then, I have taught for over 10 years in total, in both the UK and overseas, teaching students with autism, epilepsy and emotional and behavioural difficulties and specific learning difficulties including dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD, and most recently as a class Primary teacher at a Nord Anglia international school in Beijing.

I have been a passionate and creative teacher since 2009 in Early Years, Primary and Secondary. My journey as a special education needs teacher and coordinator has been very personal when my nephew was diagnosed with autism 7 years ago. My personal and professional experience has taught me that every child matters and every child has the ability to learn. Understanding about students with special needs made me realise that I needed to adapt my teaching strategies to meet the needs of each student in my class and that I should never give up on them even when no strategies seemed to be working. I have also realised that every child is unique and that I should try to understand everything that affects their way of learning, in order to provide them with optimal learning environment.

I have a law degree and spent some years as an office worker, and I have always wanted to use my English skills and work in education. I’ve been working with young people providing 1:1 learning support since 2011 and I am delighted to walk on this challenging but rewarding journey with young learners. As children have different learning styles, my mission is to help them figure out what works best for themselves. I believe the key to learning support is exploring each of my students’ inner world to gain a thorough understanding of their preferences, interests, background and culture and building positive relationships with them which provide love, security and responsive interactions for them to grow and thrive.

Guangzhou is where I was born and where I live, and I love this city. I majored in International Trading Business and my first job was working for a business consultancy company. Whilst working there, I met a French-Canadian family and together we started a small-scale preschool in our neighbourhood. My roles were varied and included marketing, enrolment and teaching. This started my love of working in education, particularly in Early Years and my next role was in an international preschool in the centre of Guangzhou for two and a half years.
