The Nursery Pod – 18 months to 3 years
Our youngest learners are part of our Nursery Pod which consists of: a spacious, naturally lit indoor room with beautiful new furnishings and resources; a stimulating and calm playroom room for our youngest learners; a soft-play room for adventurous rumbling and tumbling; an outdoor creative and messy play area; challenging climbing equipment; and a natural garden to explore and enjoy.
Children in this group have a designated ‘home base’ and home base teacher where they start and finish each day. Throughout their morning the ‘cubs’ have the opportunity to explore the Nursery Pod and engage in purposeful learning challenges and experiences offered in each of the spaces. The ‘cubs’ have daily opportunities for small group work, targeted at their age and stage, as well as circle time sessions and differentiated specialist lessons.
Our skilled nursery teachers and learning assistants personalise the learning and ensure that each child is supported and challenged according to their needs and stage of development.
Foundation 1 Pod (F1) – 3 turning 4 years
Our Foundation 1 base consists of 3 large, naturally lit rooms and a messy play room which interconnect, allowing children to free flow between the learning environments during inquiry time. Children also access the outdoor learning environments which have sand and water play, challenging climbing equipment, and a natural garden to explore and enjoy.
Children in this group have a designated ‘home base’ and teacher where they start and finish each day. Throughout the day the children have the opportunity to explore the F1 Pod and engage in purposeful learning challenges and experiences offered in each of the spaces. The children have daily opportunities for small group work, targeted at their age and stage, as well as circle time sessions and differentiated specialist lessons.
Our F1 program is a natural progression on from our Nursery programme, with a focus on further developing the children’s independence, respect and social skills, alongside their ever-growing curiosity. The children learn together in a play-based environment, with teachers and learning assistants offering provocations and extensions to deepen and widen the children’s understanding.
Children’s interests are at the heart of F1 learning, driving the setup of the environment and direction of the learning. These interests (or topics) are regularly shared with parents to encourage a home-school communication. Books, stories, photographs or parent volunteers related to the children’s interests are always welcomed in our classes.
Foundation 2 – 4 turning 5 years
We have three F2 classes, each with their own teacher and learning assistant. The F2 classrooms are connected via a shared outdoor space allowing collaborative learning between classes to easily take place. Children also experience learning in the wider school environment such as the maker space, music room, theatre, gym, and pool.
In F2 we adopt an inquiry-based approach, underpinned by the UK Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The children are given greater opportunities to extend their development across the prime areas: Communication and Language; Physical Development; and Personal, Social and Emotional Development; and also the specific areas of: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. We develop and encourage positive attitudes to learning, such as curiosity, risk taking, determination, persistence, concentration, and aim to build children’s learning power through resilience and resourcefulness.
We provide a balance between adult-led and child-initiated experiences. Children are supported in their development through play and exploration opportunities, short carpet sessions, and adult guided work. Although the curriculum remains very play based, the balance shifts gradually through the Foundation 2 year towards more direct teacher input to help children prepare for their next learning steps in Year 1.
