On Wednesday the 23rd of January, as part of our collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), ISM students participated in a STEAM Day Event. Students had the opportunity to collaborate and participate in exciting workshops and activities in all subjects.

These activities increased students’ understanding of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts & Maths) while developing their interdisciplinary learning and practical problem-solving skills.

It was a fantastic experience to show and test our knowledge about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Our exciting theme this year was ‘Space’. Our task was to build a shelter on the planet that we were given at random. We researched and learnt lots of facts and information about the planets in our Solar System. We made our base out of a variety of materials, such as cardboard, tinfoil, straw and plastic. We were awarded points for teamwork, effort and presentation. We also had a guest judge from the Secondary Science Department who judged the winning base. Everyone had a lot of fun during STEAM Day. Moreover, students already can't wait until next year’s STEAM Day!

Year Six were joined by their Rosinka Campus peers for this year’s STEAM Day. Everyone had fun with lots of educational activities, such as learning how animals move and how they differ from one another.

As the theme of this event was ‘Superheroes’, we had to create multiple films and trailers based on Superheroes themselves and the heroes of M.I.T. One of the most popular activities was slime making. We tested which type of slime was the least sticky and would come off the surface cleanly. We used ingredients such as glue, laundry detergent, borax, glitter, cornstarch and shaving cream.

STEAM Day was a successful and an educational idea that everyone should take part in!

STEAM Day was an exciting time for the students of Years Seven to Nine to have fun and take a break from ordinary lessons. The theme was ‘Superheroes’ and we spent our time finding the heroes within us, as well as sharing our favourite ones from comics and movies.

In SIP lessons we played famous theme songs of heroes such as Superman and Batman on our instruments. We spent our Science lessons creating experiments to test our own powers like strength, speed, sight and memory. In Russian we all wrote stories, giving ourselves a power and placing ourselves in a dangerous situation. Our task in Mathematics was to research a famous mathematician. You don’t need a superpower to be a hero! In English, everyone put their teamwork skills to the test as our challenge was to write and perform our own theme song about our favourite hero.

In conclusion, STEAM Day was a fun and challenging event to celebrate all heroes, fictional as well as real. It brought everyone together with exciting challenges and interesting topics. All of the Secondary School can’t wait until STEAM Day next year!
