Rosinka Students Explore Living in Space

Rosinka Students Explore Living in Space Students of ISM Rosinka explored a vast array of projects that covered all areas of living in space. HERO SKY_2944

As MIT (Massachusetts Institute for Technology)  researchers look towards a future of space homes and interplanetary travel, they are not only thinking of science experiments and exploration. They are also thinking about quality of life, and bringing the comforts of home to outer space. What would you like to have in space? 

Students of ISM Rosinka were asked this question at the beginning of STEAM Week. They were presented with a vast array of projects that covered all areas of Living in Space. From creating their own space habitat in Pre-Nursery, to designing space suits in Year One, to modelling habitation pods in Year Six, the amount of work produced by students during STEAM Week ensured they are now prepared for life in space.

With all aspects of STEAM involved in every year group’s project, students were able to:

  • Provide scientific background and present information in a neat manner; 
  • Explore available technology and apply it as necessary;
  • Design a 3D or a physical model as dictated by their project;
  • Support their project with artwork in any way, shape or form;
  • Calculate the specific numerical data required for project success.

During the week, students had all necessary technology at hand. Younger students from Year One and Year Two became directors of their own space videos using a green screen. In Year Four, the scene was dominated by electric circuitry and bright LED lights. All of Upper Primary explored robotics and block-coding with Skribots - robots that can be programmed to move themselves and other objects around them. Augmented reality led the way in exploring the history of space in Year Six. Lastly, in Music lessons, students were able to use fruit and vegetables as piano keys using MakeyMakeys - a fun and exciting way to compose an electric circuit.

As part of the first MIT Challenge, Living in Space, students were able to share their ideas, plans and projects on Global Campus, a global Nord Anglia community of over 60,000 students. Overall, the week gave students an opportunity to answer the most important question: would they like to live in space?
