An interview with Laura Del Pra, Global Debate Upper Secondary Team Captain

  • Laura Ferrer Del Pra
  • Upper Secondary School Global Campus Debate Team
  • Lower Secondary School Global Campus Debate Team

How does it feel to represent The British School of Beijing as Captain of the Global Debate Team?

I feel honored to be able to represent the school in debates on such powerful issues. Being the captain of a team isn’t just giving orders and telling people what to do and when to do it by. It is taking part and seeing the debate move from step one to step two. It’s amazing to see brilliant people putting their minds together to solve issues. I’m so excited to see what is coming next!

Over the past few years, you’ve competed in several debating competitions.  Do you have a proudest moment?

I remember last year when I took part for the second time in the regional round of World Scholar’s Cup. The previous year I hadn’t received any medals and I knew that I had to do something about it. Last year, I was awarded four medals, and my team received 2 trophies. This was such a remarkable moment because it was proof of the hard work that I had put in to win those awards. It is amazing going up on stage and feeling like you have accomplished something and that you are being recognized for it.

What do you consider to be the benefits of debating?

I think that debating isn’t just about proving a point, it’s about learning how to look at the issues that are around you. With debates, I have learned to believe in things that I didn’t even agree with initially. I think that debating skills are some of the best qualities that someone can have. It helps you in school, to see different sides of events and it helps you in life to be more open minded about global events and issues.

If you had a piece of advice for students who were considering a future in a debating team, what would it be?

My advice to students would be, do it for yourself. Sometimes when someone says debating it sounds a bit nerdy, but it isn’t. I have met so many different people in debates. I always think that to be successful in something it needs to start with the person. If you don’t believe in yourself then who will? Just go up there and say what you believe in and convince them to believe in it too. That is the power of debating, to help people see the world as a better place, and to help people make the world a better place.
