United Nations Day is all about informing people about the aims and achievements of the United Nations Organization. Kings School had a really exciting UN day this year, with lots of fun activities and exciting learning about different United Nations countries. The children all came to school in their national costumes and as usual looked spectacular! The morning started with an assembly to showcase these great costumes and explain the work done by the United Nations around the globe. The UN work to eradicate poverty, promote equality and provide humanitarian aid to those that need it. It is important to celebrate the work they are doing.After our assembly the children went off to their different countries (classrooms) with their passports. After getting their passport stamped, they were taught all about the country they were in and took part in a variety of exciting activities. In Brazil they made Brazilian headdresses; in Thailand they learnt some Muay Thai and in Australia they made delicious lamingtons. A lamington is a cake dipped in sweet chocolate frosting and rolled in coconut. Fun and delicious to make! Other activities happening across the school included making Cornish pasties, taking part in British sports day games and creating pointillist paintings. All the children had a lot of fun and learnt a lot about different UN countries. KS3 had a very special role in the proceedings. Rather than visiting different classrooms, Year 7 ran their own activity in their class for younger children to participate in and Years 8 and 9 went round helping other classes. It was great to see our older students showing so much independence and supporting others.In the afternoon there was a second assembly combining our weekly celebration assembly with a celebration of the activities carried out over the course of the day. The children discussed their favourite activities and shared what they had learnt. Special certificates were handed out to children who had worked really hard during the day and to those that had shown great geographical knowledge. UN day is always an exciting day and important for both students and teachers and Kings School cant wait until the next one!
