Helping Students Navigate Exam Pressure: Guidance for Parents

Exam season can feel challenging, but the right support makes a meaningful difference. At Nord Anglia International School Manila, we recognise the important role families play in helping students navigate exams with confidence and balance.

Our recent Parents in Partnership session, led by Ms. Tina Meron, NAIS Manila Guidance Counsellor, focused on practical ways parents can support children in managing exam pressure while maintaining wellbeing.

Understanding Exam Pressure

For many students, exams can bring increased expectations and heightened emotions. While a certain level of challenge can motivate learning, too much pressure can affect confidence, focus, and wellbeing. Support from both school and home helps students feel secure and capable during this period. The session highlighted how reassurance, routine, and open communication can help students feel more in control of their learning experience.

How Families Can Support

Parents explored simple, effective ways to support children during exam periods, including:

• Encouraging balanced study routines
• Creating calm and structured home environments
• Supporting healthy sleep and wellbeing habits
• Maintaining perspective around assessment results

These approaches help students manage expectations while building resilience and confidence.

Most important way parents can support their child’s wellbeing during exam periods

"Exam season can feel overwhelming. During this time, parents can help by staying calm and reassuring. They can be a “safe space” where their children can feel frustrated, worried, or tired without being judged. They can let their children know that it’s okay to feel pressured—and that their hard work matters more than their scores. Practical support can also go a long way. Parents can work together with their children to create a realistic study plan that includes self-care breaks. They can try relaxing activities together and support healthier habits by making sure their children are eating well and getting enough rest." - shared by Christina Meron, NAIS Manila Guidance Counsellor.

A Partnership Approach

At NAIS Manila, supporting students through exam periods is a shared effort between school and home. Sessions such as Parents in Partnership provide families with insight and practical guidance, helping create consistency between school support and home encouragement. With the right environment and understanding, students are better able to approach exams with confidence, balance, and a positive mindset.
