A Culture of Challenge, Support, and Growth
At North Broward Preparatory School, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is more than an academic pathway. It is a culture built on curiosity, resilience, and a global perspective. Through the voices of Senior IB student Abiel Socorro and AP and IB Coordinator Melanie Diamond, the true impact of the program comes into focus.
Preparing for the Challenge
Before beginning the IB Diploma Programme, Abiel knew what he was stepping into. He understood the rigor and recognized that the challenge would be worth it in the long run. One of his biggest concerns was the Extended Essay, a four-thousand-word research paper he had never attempted before, along with the Internal Assessments required in each subject.
Rather than feeling discouraged, Abiel focused on preparing mentally. He knew confidence would be essential and took time to learn from students who had completed the program before him. His coursework in ninth and tenth grade played a significant role as well, particularly AP World History with Dr. Reynolds. That class emphasized consistent note taking, deep understanding of content, and the importance of staying committed to the process. Those habits became essential tools once he entered IB.

Support When It Matters Most
Like many students, Abiel faced moments when the demands of the program felt overwhelming. During the latter part of his junior year, he experienced difficult family circumstances that made it challenging to stay mentally present with his coursework. During that time, the support he received from North Broward Prep made a meaningful difference.
Abiel was able to work with Assistant High School Principal, Ms. Wolpowitz, who helped him navigate both his academic responsibilities and his IB course requirements. With guidance, flexibility, and understanding, he was able to regain his footing and stay on track.
One particularly impactful moment came during his Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, a required component of the IB core. While working on his TOK exhibition, which involves selecting three objects connected by a central question, Abiel struggled to fully understand the expectations. With support from his teacher, he was given the opportunity to revisit and redo the work. More importantly, the experience helped him gain clarity, improve his thinking, and walk away with new questions and a deeper understanding of the purpose behind the assignment.
Staying Organized and Connected
Success in the IB program requires strong organization and communication, and Abiel credits NBPS systems with helping him stay balanced. Regularly checking Canvas and school email allowed him to stay ahead of deadlines and expectations. Weekly posts from teachers shared every Sunday, provided consistent updates and helped students plan their week effectively.
Equally important was the strong sense of community. Abiel shared many of his classes with the same group of peers throughout the day, which created an environment of accountability and mutual support. Students checked in with one another, made sure no one missed important information, and moved through the day together as a team.
Growth Beyond the Classroom
When asked what helped him grow most as a student and as a person, Abiel did not hesitate to highlight the people. From classmates to friends to teachers, he felt welcomed throughout his entire journey at North Broward Prep. Being surrounded by students who shared the same academic passion and curiosity pushed him to grow and stay motivated.
He credits the school with introducing him to individuals who truly impacted his life and who will continue to do so well beyond graduation.
That growth extended into the college process as well. Abiel shared that the academic rigor of NBPS strengthened his college applications and gave him the confidence to apply to highly selective institutions. The challenging coursework, combined with the inspiration of being surrounded by passionate peers, helped shape his goals.
He also expressed deep gratitude for his college counselor, Mrs. Torres, who supported him throughout the process. Their strong relationship allowed him to openly share personal experiences while working on his personal statement, which was both meaningful and emotional. That trust and guidance played a key role in his success.
Abiel was ultimately accepted through Early Decision to Northwestern University, where he plans to study Economics.

What Makes IB at NBPS Unique
AP and IB Coordinator Melanie Diamond emphasizes what truly sets the IB program at North Broward Prep apart is that it is not just coursework. It is a culture. While the program is widely regarded as the most rigorous academic pathway at the school, its impact goes far beyond academics.
Students are supported in their creativity and in their service, two essential components of the IB philosophy. Strategic course counseling is embedded throughout the program. Full IB Diploma candidates meet directly with the IB Coordinator to thoughtfully map out their junior and senior year schedules. All rising eleventh grade students also meet with their college counselor to plan the remainder of their high school coursework.
Within the rigor of the program, students are encouraged to personalize their academic experience. Whether a student is deeply interested in the social sciences or wishes to pursue the arts, the program allows flexibility within the structure to align coursework with individual passions.
Preparing for College and the World Beyond
The IB program is intentionally designed to prepare students for both college and real world challenges. Its mission aligns closely with the mission of North Broward Prep by emphasizing academic writing across disciplines, independent research, and strong time management skills, all developed under meaningful academic pressure.
Each IB course invites students to view their subject through a global lens. This approach builds perspective, critical thinking, and stamina, qualities that colleges value and that students need far beyond the classroom.
Considering the IB Diploma Programme
For students and families who are unsure whether the IB Diploma Programme is the right fit, Melanie Diamond encourages exploration and conversation. North Broward Prep hosts informational meetings, provides an IB handbook, and creates opportunities for prospective families to hear directly from current IB students.
Upperclassmen regularly share their experiences with underclassmen, offering honest insights into balancing IB coursework with other aspects of student life. These conversations help families make informed decisions and understand what it truly means to be part of the IB community at NBPS.
At North Broward Preparatory School, the IB experience is a journey defined by challenge, support, and lasting growth.
