Even for those who have not, here at BISB we are committed to supporting our students and school community to improve their general health and wellbeing. Getting active is one way to do this and there is currently a wide range of native English opportunities to do so, both within our school and across the city.
This weekly feature serves to showcase what is currently on offer to help improve and sustain your activity levels as well as offer some tips and advice on how to adopt healthier lifestyle choices for you and your family.
Issue 2 – Swimming
The cooler weather conditions at present often act as a deterrent to many of us to getting out and active, despite our best intentions. With multiple indoor options, swimming has the potential to combat this. For the brave individuals amongst us, there are several outdoor options available come rain, snow or sunshine. It goes without saying that Budapest is also home to many infamous thermal baths!
- Knowing how to keep yourself and others safe in and around water is so important for the whole family. Learning to swim equips us with these key skills to do so with confidence.
- With proven health benefits, swimming can improve flexibility of muscles and joints, increase muscle strength, reduce stress and the risk of diabetes and the symptoms of asthma.
- As a non-weight bearing activity, it is an ideal workout for people in injury rehabilitation as well as those managing arthritis and stiff joints.
- Just a 30 minute swim can burn anywhere between 100-550 calories depending on the intensity.
Who can get involved?
With both native Hungarian and English programmes available, one of the main benefits of swimming in Budapest is how accessible it is to the whole family. It is affordable, facilities are plentiful, and opportunities include, but are not limited to; thermal baths, water parks, recreational swimming, learn to swim programmes and competitive club swimming.
