Early Years Virtual School Experience

The Early Years students have adapted really well to their Virtual School routine. They join their Zoom classes to connect with their peers, learn together, move together and talk each day about their own daily experiences. Paediatricians and developmental psychologists recommend young children spend at least three hours per day learning through hands-on and active play with open-ended materials they can move and manipulate themselves.

At the beginning of the transition to Virtual School, the Early Years team hosted a Zoom meeting with parents to share this important message about child development. During this meeting, the Early Years team provided ideas for self-directed play, while discussing how to set boundaries for children's independent time at home.

Ideas for outdoor play were also shared, to ensure children gain the vital outdoor movement that they need each day, as well as ideas for sensory play at home with suggestions for materials to play with.

Our afternoon Zoom sessions have been dedicated for children to share their experiences from self-directed playtime. Parents are also sharing photographs and videos of children’s play on Kinteract, and we make time for children to talk about these.

The children really enjoy this afternoon Zoom session where they can reflect together on their independent play ideas, making them feel listened to and valued. We hope you enjoy these photos of some of the wonderful and creative things our Early Years children are doing in their self-directed playtime.
