At BSC we hold a Music Week every half term, during which we run workshops focusing on different instruments, invite professional musicians in to run unique workshops, and hold a recital where all ages and standards of musician can experience performing to an audience.
This term we were thrilled to invite Steve Yepez, a professional flautist, back to visit the school again to run a workshop with a massive group of BSC flautists. We all learned a lot and enjoyed hearing him play.
Some of our very own staff ran a guitar work shop - who knew that Mr. Nowak and Mr. Blair are so talented? Some mentors from Year 9 and Year 11 were also there to give a helping hand. It was lots of fun and I know that a lot of students are now inspired to learn the guitar.
On Wednesday we were treated to a whole host of opera singers in the music department from the Chicago Opera Playhouse - they were AMAZING. Please take a look on the music Twitter feed (@MusicatBSC) for some videos as the music they performed was breathtaking. Students learned about Mozart's The Magic Flute and the links between Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story.
On Thursday we hosted the third BSC recital - well done to all of our performers! As always, we were proud of you and enjoyed listening to the pieces you prepared for us.
Roll on Music Week 4! If you would like to sign up for a recital, please email the music department. The instrumental workshops will be confirmed in the next music letter and the middle and high school workshop is about Jazz and improvisation with one of Chicago's very best coming to run the session!
