The British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum
Coming from the English National Curriculum – and informed by our British heritage and international school environment – we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework in our Guangzhou private preschool and kindergarten, which covers children’s development from Toddlers to Reception (1 to 5 years old).
There are four themes within the EYFS Curriculum:
- A Unique Child: Every child is a competent learner from birth and can be resilient, capable, confident, and self-assured.
- Positive Relationships: Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and carers.
- Enabling Environments: The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending a child’s development and learning.
- Learning and Developing: Children grow in different ways and at different rates, and all areas of learning and development are equally important.
We use these themes throughout the learning and development of your child in the EYFS.
How Your Child Learns In The Early Years At Our International School
Children learn in a variety of ways: by watching others, talking, asking questions, listening, exploring, and investigating.
During playtime, we support your child and encourage them to find out more as they explore; to play with what they know and to be willing to ‘have a go’; to be involved, to concentrate, to keep trying, and to enjoy achieving what they set out to do; and to have their own ideas, to make links, and to choose different ways to do things.
The Areas Of Our International Early Years Curriculum
The EYFS curriculum is organised into seven areas of learning and development:
- Personal, Social, and Emotional Development
- Communication and Language
- Mathematical Development
- Understanding the World
- Physical Development
- Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)
- Literacy Development
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
We provide your child with the experiences and support that help them develop a positive sense of themselves and of others, as well as respect for others, social skills, and a positive disposition for learning.
Communication & Language
We constantly support and extend each child’s learning and competence in the areas of communicating, speaking, and listening.
Mathematical Development
We develop your child’s understanding of maths in a broad range of contexts. They can explore, enjoy, learn, practise, and talk about their understanding of maths.
Understanding the World
We support your child to make sense of the world by offering opportunities to use a range of tools safely; to encounter creatures, people, plants, and objects in natural environments; to undertake practical experiments; and to work with a range of materials.
Physical Development
We encourage the physical development of your child by giving them opportunities to be active, to interact with others, and to improve their skills of coordination, control, manipulation, and movement. We always support them in developing an understanding of the importance of physical activity and in making healthy choices in relation to food.
Expressive Arts & Design (EAD)
We encourage your child’s creativity by supporting their curiosity, exploration, and play. We give them opportunities to explore and share their thoughts, ideas, and feelings through a variety of art, music, movement, dance, imaginative and role-playing activities, design, and technology.
Literacy Development
We constantly support and extend your child’s literacy as they begin to read and write.
The EYFS curriculum enables your child to develop their personalities, talents, and abilities. In turn, they also develop a strong sense of self, feel positive about their abilities as a learner, form constructive relationships, and become confident communicators.
