At The British School of Guangzhou, we can personalise the A-Level programme so it plays to each individual’s strengths, which we believe is of vital importance when it comes to maximising our students' chances of success. Students can choose to specialise in the sciences, arts or languages, or opt for a broader curriculum based on their future aspirations and their strengths.
Our students are able to choose any combination of the 17 A-Level subjects that we offer. This provides flexibility for those students who wish to maintain breadth in their studies, as well as those who wish to specialise a particular academic area of strength.
The subjects are Mathematics, Further mathematics, Business Studies, Economics, English Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geography, History, Fine Art, Drama & Theatre Studies, Computer Science, Spanish, French, Music, Psychology, Chinese, Physical Education.
A-Level certification is similar to IB qualifications in terms of university recognition. All USA, UK, Australian, Canadian and European Universities accept A-Level certification and hold them in extremely high regard. This applies equally to Asian universities. The A-Level certification we offer is externally marked by Cambridge University and Edexcel, two of the ‘gold standard’ accrediting boards.
To provide breadth and a greater emphasis on skills, students can take part in further complementary courses. These can include qualifications like the highly regarded Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is similar in structure to a university dissertation, helping our students as they apply to the world’s top institutions.
Sixth Form Goals
The main priority for our sixth form students is to ensure they achieve enough credit during their time with us to allow them to go to the most prestigious universities available to them. We also want students to leave the British School of Guangzhou with the correct skills and attributes to be highly successful life-long learners.
In addition to formal positions of responsibility, we also provide students with the opportunity to show leadership and initiative. These opportunities include subject prefect positions and running after school activities for younger students.
Our students take part in a number of trips throughout sixth form to develop their leadership skills and to allow opportunities for personal growth. These have included trips to Europe, USA and throughout China and Asia with outward-bound courses in Hong Kong involving sailing, kayaking and trekking proving very popular.
Community Service and Travel
We also facilitate many charity trips to support organisations like Habitat for Humanity with building and other community projects, as well as International Award (IA) adventurous journeys, both within China and to destinations like Thailand, Germany and Hong Kong. As an active member of Global Campus, we also send our Year 12 students to Tanzania each year, where they support projects that assist local schools.
The inclusion of these outward-bound based activities within the curriculum allows our students to achieve additional qualifications to enhance their personal portfolios. This is our way of recognising the importance that many top universities place on students taking on such challenges.
