I have lead EAL provision across the Primary and Early Years phases at the British School of Guangzhou for the last 3 years and am delighted to take on the role the Assistant Head of Primary, responsible for languages and cultures.

Many years ago, after leaving university I taught a group of teachers an art lesson in my local community. I felt very relaxed and passionate about sharing my knowledge and I realised at the time that communicating effectively using clear and precise language structures made it easy for the teachers to follow. Those teachers loved learning new things in my first ever lesson and it was the first stepping stone towards a career in teaching.

I came to Guangzhou to teach for a year, earn a bit of money then go off traveling. I very quickly fell in love with the job and city though, and have now been here teaching EAL for over ten years. The majority of that time was spent at Guangwai Wai Xiao – a highly regarded school attached the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies – I was fortunate to be part of great team, and together we helped build an excellent EAL department over the last nine years. However, I felt I had learned all I could at the school and was desperate for a new challenge. It was an extremely easy decision to join the British School as I believe it to be the best school in the city, and I can’t wait to join the team!

I had worked as a primary/secondary teacher in Canada for 16 years before embarking on my international teaching adventure. I taught in inclusive classrooms, special needs programs, and EAL resource classes. I have lived in Guangzhou for 2 years teaching EAL students. I am excited to join the BSG family for the collegial team atmosphere as well as the opportunity to pursue more professional development. In my classes I aim to engage the students and encourage them to build on their individual strength to help them reach for their goals and grow.
