In 2012 I decided to take the leap into international education after teaching in the UK. I moved out to Guangzhou, fell in love with the city and have lived here happily ever since. I have lead EAL provision across the Primary and Early Years phases at the British School of Guangzhou for the last 3 years and am delighted to take on the role the Assistant Head of Primary, responsible for languages and cultures.

I aim to teach our students in an engaging way so that they can enjoy themselves whilst learning, unlocking their true potential.

I have worked as a teacher helping young language learners for over 20 years. Initially, that was in my native UK, where, after completing my PGCE in Modern Foreign Languages, I taught German and French in the English Midlands. After also acquiring a CELTA qualification, I came to East Asia and have now over 15 years’ experience of teaching young English language learners in various parts of this region, particularly Korea and Japan.

I studied English language at Chung Ang University in Korea. I always enjoyed learning new languages as I am fascinated by different cultures.  I spent my last year of my University life in the United States and also volunteered at the local primary school as a supportive teacher. Then I returned to Korea and became a language teacher, teaching English to non-native speakers of English, mainly young learners. This allowed me to build effective teaching skills and realised how much I enjoy teaching!

I came to Guangzhou to teach for a year, earn a bit of money then go off traveling. I very quickly fell in love with the job and city though, and have now been here teaching EAL for over ten years. The majority of that time was spent at Guangwai Wai Xiao – a highly regarded school attached the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies – I was fortunate to be part of great team, and together we helped build an excellent EAL department over the last nine years. However, I felt I had learned all I could at the school and was desperate for a new challenge. It was an extremely easy decision to join the British School as I believe it to be the best school in the city, and I can’t wait to join the team!

I had worked as a primary/secondary teacher in Canada for 16 years before embarking on my international teaching adventure. I taught in inclusive classrooms, special needs programs, and EAL resource classes. I have lived in Guangzhou for 2 years teaching EAL students. I am excited to join the BSG family for the collegial team atmosphere as well as the opportunity to pursue more professional development. In my classes I aim to engage the students and encourage them to build on their individual strength to help them reach for their goals and grow.
