I started working with EAL children after my degree in Applied Linguistics and Language teaching and have led EAL (English as an Additional Language) teams in three other International Schools – Bangkok Patana School in Thailand, The British International School Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and The British School Warsaw in Poland.  In the two latter schools, I was Head of Inclusion overseeing the provision for both EAL and SEN (Special Educational Needs).

When I was in university, I would have never imagined pursuing the profession of a teacher. Back then, banking and finance held a lot of fascination for me and hence I pursued my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, specialising in this field. After working at HSBC- Singapore for two years and staring at a computer screen all day, realisation struck and I started questioning what I really wanted out of my professional life. It is then that my journey as a teacher began.

From a very young age, I have always had an ear for language. By high school, I was already fluent in English, French and Arabic, and looking to take on a fourth. So I started studying Mandarin and became captivated by the Chinese language and culture. At the age of 19, I made a life-changing decision to move to China to study at Tianjin University of Technology, and in 2015, graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Mandarin and Japanese.

Many years ago, after leaving university I taught a group of teachers an art lesson in my local community. I felt very relaxed and passionate about sharing my knowledge and I realised at the time that communicating effectively using clear and precise language structures made it easy for the teachers to follow. Those teachers loved learning new things in my first ever lesson and it was the first stepping stone towards a career in teaching.

I came to Guangzhou to teach for a year, earn a bit of money then go off traveling. I very quickly fell in love with the job and city though, and have now been here teaching EAL for over ten years. The majority of that time was spent at Guangwai Wai Xiao – a highly regarded school attached the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies – I was fortunate to be part of great team, and together we helped build an excellent EAL department over the last nine years. However, I felt I had learned all I could at the school and was desperate for a new challenge. It was an extremely easy decision to join the British School as I believe it to be the best school in the city, and I can’t wait to join the team!
