I began my teaching career in 1982 at a small village School in Norfolk. However, it was during my 6 years at Bangkok Patana School that I discovered my passion for international education. After 6 years as a Deputy Head in Wiltshire, I was ready for another international challenge, and in 2004, I helped to set up the British School of Beijing as the founding Deputy Head.

There is no greater privilege than working with young people during their formative years. When opportunity and support is combined with motivation and time, it is a recipe for success that all learners, young and old, can follow. Throughout my career, I have been incredibly fortunate to work in schools where such an approach exists. Whether working in dynamic state and private schools in the UK, or overseas in Bahrain, Dubai, Thailand and, now, China, the day-to-day interactions with both students and colleagues is a never ending source of enjoyment and challenge.

In 2003 I completed my Primary PGCE at St Mary’s University Strawberry Hill in London. I decided to return back to my home in Co. Derry, Ireland on completion and taught a Year 1 class in Belfast. During that time my eyes were opened to the different learning needs of each child in my class and this taught me how to plan for these needs.

I wanted to further my knowledge of teaching strategies for pupils with challenges in language and communication and cognitive developmental ability so I completed a MEd at Queens University Belfast and taught in a Special School.

I entered education because of the opportunity it gave me to work with young enquiring minds. Being able to inspire children to develop skills for their life ahead (wherever that may be in the world) is a privilege.

Having graduated in 1995, I spent 15 year teaching Physical Education in the North East of England before taking the exciting step to move overseas and begin my international teaching experience with my wife Roslyn and our two daughters Ellis and Chloe. Our first move was the Regents International School in Thailand and during our 8 years at the school, Nord Anglia Education became the owners of the school and we have both remained with the company since. We then moved to our sister school in Qatar before being offered the wonderful opportunity to come and join BSG in Guangzhou.

My wife and I moved to China in 2003 and we have both thoroughly enjoyed the opportunities this fast-developing country has presented us with ever since. The 'Middle Kingdom' really is an exciting place to be and with two children now growing up quickly, Guangzhou feels very much like a second home.

Working within the education sector is a privilege and our school is simply amazing, offering challenges of course but wonderful rewards as you see just how much a good school can mean to a community.

On quiet days, I can be found cycling the beautiful Guangdong countryside, coaching children's rugby or simply playing a game of football or some music with colleagues and friends.
