Head of Early Years

In 2003 I completed my Primary PGCE at St Mary’s University Strawberry Hill in London. I decided to return back to my home in Co. Derry, Ireland on completion and taught a Year 1 class in Belfast. During that time my eyes were opened to the different learning needs of each child in my class and this taught me how to plan for these needs.

I wanted to further my knowledge of teaching strategies for pupils with challenges in language and communication and cognitive developmental ability so I completed a MEd at Queens University Belfast and taught in a Special School.

In 2012 I was seconded out to the Department of Education N.I. I took up the position of Early Years Advisor. This role provided me with the opportunity to work with young children and deliver early intervention, support and capacity building sessions for parents and teachers. This was a very important stage of my career as I gained immense experience in writing IEP’s and evaluating pupil progress and best practice in the Early Years setting.

I then lived in Beijing with my husband and three young children . I was the Academic Leader for Phase 1 and worked very hard during my time at BSB Sanlitun to develop a strong transition for the children, as well as develop assessment and cross curricular learning.

I feel very lucky to be able to offer my children the opportunity to live in and experience such an enriching and culturally diverse country. I know they have gained an awareness and respect for the different cultures and have made life-long friends during our time in Beijing, as well as learning to speak Mandarin.

Last year, I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity to participate in the Nord Anglia Middle Leadership and completed a dissertation, for which I was fortunate enough to visit BSG. When I arrived at BSG, I just fell in love with the green hills, sunshine, the outstanding facilities and the warm welcoming staff, who went out of their way to welcome me and support my dissertation.

I feel so fortunate to have been offered such a special role as Head of Early Years and am looking forward to working in the beautiful Lakefront setting.

As a busy mum of three, my spare time is precious with my family. We enjoy travelling and have toured Europe together since our babies were small and are now thoroughly enjoying our adventures touring Asia during the school holidays.

We are a sporty family and enjoy GAA  football and hurling as well as swimming and cycling.

My secret guilty pleasures are chocolate, shopping and more chocolate. I love to cook and make an amazing lasagne and Sunday roast. We are looking forward to meeting lots of new families and spending quality time with other families sharing this amazing adventure in China.
