Helen Bramley

Helen Francesca Bramley (3)

Head of Visual Arts

I joined The British School of Beijing, Shunyi (BSB) in 2015 as a Visual Arts teacher for the secondary school. I completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa in 2001. Later, in 2003, I completed a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from the same University. I began teaching during my postgraduate studies and realised this was a passion I could pursue.  In 2006 I completed my PGCE through the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Originally from Nottingham in the UK, my family moved to South Africa when I was quite young. I have lived and worked in South Africa for most of my life. While living in South Africa I went on a one year Round Square teaching exchange to Aiglon College in Switzerland. Living and teaching in the quiet Alps was quite a cultural shift from bustling Johannesburg. This fantastic opportunity has allowed me to develop a global network of teachers.

Throughout my teaching career I have focused on the development of two and three dimensional artworks in a variety of media and styles. I encourage my learners to find their own visual language and interests and to build on the skills they have developed in class. I am fascinated by Art History and Visual Culture Studies and by contrasts in our daily lives. I believe the humanities are were our students find their individuality and make their mark on the world.

Outside of class I enjoy the termly reality that is school, camps and concerts, talks and field trips. The relationships outside the class are as important as those developed inside. I am a keen traveller who enjoys scuba diving, recreational cycling, photography and exploring.
