Shaila Samtani

Head of Secondary EAL

When I was in university, I would have never imagined pursuing the profession of a teacher. Back then, banking and finance held a lot of fascination for me and hence I pursued my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, specialising in this field. After working at HSBC- Singapore for two years and staring at a computer screen all day, realisation struck and I started questioning what I really wanted out of my professional life. It is then that my journey as a teacher began.

As I have always had a strong affinity for languages, I went for teacher training and obtained my CELTA (Cambridge qualification for teaching Adults) in 2006. I then followed this up with a CELTYL (Cambridge qualification for young learners), in order to have the skills and pedagogical knowledge to be able to teach English to all age groups. In 2010, I attained my tutor-training license as a TESMC tutor (teaching ESL to mainstream teachers) and have offered EAL INSET to mainstream teachers over the years.

My family re-located to Guangzhou in 2004 and I started off as a teaching assistant at BSG in January 2007. I attained the position of an EAL teacher at the school in August 2008, which was ensued by a leadership role as the Head of EAL in 2012 for a period of 2 years. Currently, I hold the position of the Director of the ALPS programme, which is a new initiative that has been launched to meet the growing needs of our bilingual students. Outside of school I am the director of the Cambridge English Weekend Programme, which was started in August 2013 to meet the changing demographics of our diverse student body at BSG.

The art of learning languages has grown to be my one of my greatest interests in life, as I have an innate ability for language acquisition due to my third-culture background. In addition to English being my native language, I also speak Indonesian, Hindi and Mandarin fluently. Not only do I consider language learning and travel as an interest, but also as a tool for me to appreciate what learners of foreign languages experience, which can be highly applicable to my line of work. In addition to languages, listening to music is a hobby that I am undeniably passionate about and can’t imagine life without it! Being a true altruist at heart, I do hope that I can attain my long-term goal of working for a charitable cause and help the under-privileged in whatever capacity I can. However, as I have a 17-year-old daughter, who is currently a Year 13 student at BSG, my greatest aspiration in life is to be the greatest mother I can be!
