Call To Earth Day 2022 “Living Oceans: Turning the Tide”

See this cool video in the above gallery where our students dressed in blue and green are re-creating the continents and oceans. We are all part of our planet earth. Each person has a role to play in helping to protect our earth and living oceans. What will future Earth Days look like? Together we decide.

Everyone can make a difference!

The whole school come together to celebrate #CallToEarth Day to help protect our oceans! BSB is proud to support this annual global event initiated by CNN, joining forces with schools, individuals & organisations around the world to raise awareness of environmental issues & conservation education.

BSB students and teachers are encouraged to wear blue or green like the colours of our planet and donate to charities and for the Eco-Committee to help improve our environment.

What we learnt during Assemblies

Our Eco-Committee did a wonderful job leading the Primary Assemblies this week, teaching students in different year groups about why it’s important for us to protect the oceans and what we can do to reduce pollution. Here are some comments from the students:

  • If the fish eats something bad and we eat that fish, then we get sick.
  • The ocean is part of the water cycle. The foods that we eat comes from the ocean
  • It’s estimated that each year, 12.5 million tons of plastic entered the ocean and soon there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean
  • Reduce plastic by shopping locally and ask for plastic repackaging
  • Use reusable bottles and containers instead of single use ones

Lessons about Ocean Conservation

All Primary and Secondary students had lessons about ocean conservation and environmental issues such as overfishing, pollution and how species are habitats are threatened by human actions.

For example, Year 8 Science class took part in a STEAM challenge that investigated the impact of oil spills on marine and coastline ecosystems. They brainstormed and designed methods to help them effectively clean up oil from a body of water and rescue animals in danger, all within a time limit and with limited resources!

Mr Mireku's Humanities class worked in groups to design a solution for getting rid of ghost nets in our oceans to help save wildlife.

Mr Coffey's KS3 Humanities students were very creative and produced some innovative and interesting solutions to manage waste in our oceans, such as underwater thrash collection machines and drones. Students then shared their ideas on a collaborative team poster.

Other classes explored “A Day in the Life of a Turtle”, why plastics are so harmful to the nature and living creatures, learnt about marine biologists, different kinds of sustainable materials or researched on the remarkable groups of people who are working to reverse the damages.

House Competition - Reduce Food Waste

For lunch, 3rd November is our no meat day.  Our chef Kevin prepared some special plant-based menu and the food was delicious such as pita bread with falafel, hummus, tofu goulash, grilled pepper with cheese and the Greek chickpeas salad!

On 4th November, we held the House Food Waste Competition to see which House could throw away the least amount of food. Students had learnt about the importance of not wasting food in assemblies and were keen to throw away as little as possible. The Primary Eco-Committee helped students with their waste and encouraged them to eat everything they had chosen for lunch.

Results: Saxons 1.65kg, Vikings 2.10kg, Romans 2.15kg, Normans 3.35kg.

Well done to our winner the Saxons for throwing away so little food. Let’s all work together to continue being mindful about waste every day!

At BSB Shunyi, we believe that everyone can make a difference. With our commitment to community engagement, our students develop social consciousness as an essential part of school life. In collaboration with UNICEF, all BSB students are challenged to participate in ongoing projects on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) regarding social and economic development issues that we hope to collectively achieve by 2030.
