BSB Eco-Committee making a difference in our community

BSB Eco-Committee making a difference in our community - BSB Eco-Committee making a difference in our community

In collaboration with UNICEF, BSB students are challenged to make a difference locally and globally by participating in projects related to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that we hope to collectively achieve by 2030.

Our BSB Eco-Committee initiates ongoing sustainability programmes within our school community to try and reduce our ecological footprint, raise awareness of environmental issues and find solutions together. We encourage each student to take what we learn at school and apply it in their daily lives together with their friends and family.

Zero Food Waste Challenge

On Friday 10th February the whole school participated in a food waste challenge to see which House could throw away the least food.

The event was run by the Eco-Committee who want to promote how food wastage can have such a negative impact on the planet and why it is important to save food and not throw it away. They organised the event as a team and spoke to different classes about it.

Everyone did an amazing job and the food waste was dramatically improved from a usual day.  Well Done everyone!

Primary Food Waste Results:

  • Normans 1.85kg
  • Vikings 1.65kg
  • Saxons and Romans 1.15kg – Well Done!

Secondary Food Waste Results:

  • Normans and Romans 1.90kg
  • Vikings 1.50kg
  • Saxons 1.35kg – Well Done!

No Meat Day

BSB also had a No Meat Day on Monday 13th February. We didn’t eat meat to reduce our ecological footprint, help animals across the world and reduce waste. Our chef Kevin prepared some special plant-based menu such as tofu, spinach quiche and vegetable samosa. The food was delicious!

Let’s hear from students what we’ve learnt and how we can help the Earth!

  • Aditi Year 6 – It’s important to reduce waste so that we can become a more eco-friendly school. Also there are people in Africa who don’t have enough food and water so we shouldn’t waste food here.
  • Alec Year 6 - I’m actually a vegetarian so I didn't notice any big difference, but it was good to have some more options available in the canteen. I think it’s worth trying again because it’s good for the environment.
  • Charis Year 7 – There is limited water and food in the world. We shouldn’t waste food because there are other people who don’t have food and there won’t be enough for everyone.
  • Daniel Year 3 - I think No Meat Day is a nice idea because it helps animals. I like the tofu.
  • Doryeon Year 13 – It’s important to reduce food waste and other non-biodegradable matters because they cause many environment problems like climate change and global warming.
  • Natalie Year 6 – We need to make the earth a better place.
  • Nolan Year 6 - I think No Meat Day is a good idea because eating vegetables is good for you. We don’t always need to eat meat. I agree we should do it again.
  • Phil GK2 – If we do not eat and throw away our food, we will waste the limited food in the world. We should not waste food at school and at home.
  • Ryan Year 4 – The farmers use a lot of time and energy to produce the food. If people waste our food, the farmers’ work will be wasted.

What did we learn?

Small acts can change the world.

At BSB Shunyi, we believe everyone can make a difference. With our commitment to community engagement, our students develop social consciousness as an essential part of school life.
