Year 3 and Pre-Historic People

Year 3 and Pre-Historic People - Year 3 and Pre-Historic People

This week in Year 3, we started our new Term 2 Science unit on “Pre-historic people” by learning about rocks.

While it may not seem like the most engaging subject at first glance, it is really interesting! What helps us bring the subject to life is having our own collection of rocks with various sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks. Students really enjoyed being able to look closely using magnifying glasses as well as touch the real rocks.

For many students, it was the first time seeing this variety of rocks and one or two students even asked if they were real! The introductory lesson taught us how rocks are formed and the three main rock types. Apart from exploring rock samples, students also had to use what they’d learned to try to think about which rocks belong to which category. We are excited for the rest of this unit, especially as it ties in nicely with our previous topic unit on The Stone Age.
