Year 6 has immersed themselves in learning about World War 2. Following the English National Curriculum, the topic is designed to generate conversations about the impact of war and focuses on the effects the Second World War had on the lives of millions of children around the world.
The topic started with a ‘World War 2’ experience. This was an immersive and interactive lesson where Year 6 could go back in time and explore the past. Students investigated rations, read through old newspapers, tried on gas masks and held briefcases used by children who had to evacuate during the time. They recorded their experience, which helped generate excellent discussions and questions to direct learning.
Year 6 also explored historical events that led to WW2 and worked in groups to order events on a timeline. They then started researching and writing about the Blitz in Britain and what measures were taken to keep people safe. They created vibrant Blitz art using oil pastels and skyline silhouettes.
The students used various digital apps to create stunning photoshops of themselves as WW2 soldiers to further immerse them in learning.
Students then delved into the significance of shelters during World War II and had the opportunity to construct their own using various natural materials.
Inspired by the resilience and ingenuity of people during wartime, the students embarked on a journey of discovery. They researched the history of Anderson and Morrison shelters and explored how these makeshift structures played a crucial role in protecting civilians during the challenging times of the Second World War.
Working in small groups, Year 6 used various materials to replicate the shelters used in war-torn Britain. They demonstrated exceptional teamwork and creativity to bring their builds to life and used various techniques to add detail.
This hands-on approach to learning allowed students to actively engage with the subject matter and develop a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by people during the war.
In the coming weeks, Year 6 will revisit shelters, but this time, they will be big enough to enter!
BSB Primary STEAM Week is a unique opportunity for our students to engage in exciting, hands-on activities that combine creativity, design, and problem-solving.
Year 5’s PIAW allowed the children to bring their learning to life and transport themselves to the period of time they explored in class.
