Drama Students inspired by Juilliard Specialist Feb 2024

We are delighted to welcome Juilliard Drama Specialist Nick Mahmat from New York to BSB!

Mr. Mahmat provided training and workshops in Drama to our faculty on 19^th and 20^th February. His visit consisted of lesson observations, implementation of Juilliard's Creative Classroom curriculum, and interactions with our Secondary students with demo lessons.

Having Juilliard in the school provides great professional development for our arts staff and gives high-level interactions with our students by connecting them to the greater world of the Arts and to give a deeper understanding of the Performing Arts.

Year 10 student Mario said “It was really good to start talking to yourself. For instance, if you are performing a soliloquy, Mr. Mahmat helped me understand how to get into a condition where I could understand how I should feel when performing.  I was able to understand it better through the process of writing a soliloquy. I can write something that comes from inside me, and I feel I am able to act that out.”

Mr. Ciaran McLaughlin, Drama Teacher said “It’s always a refreshing experience when we are able to interact directly with Juilliard. It was a particularly great pleasure for Nick Mahmat to join us from Juilliard. It was great to be able to see how my classes might be taught by a specialist, which gave me lots of ideas and techniques I can use as a teacher going forward. It was brilliant to be able to discuss and evaluate what we can do for the Drama curriculum going forward, and I’m really looking forward to applying these strategies and structures to the future. I’m enthusiastically looking forward to collaborating in the future with Juilliard Specialists, as we continue to help our Drama department grow in quality throughout the upcoming years, making sure students have a diverse and robust education.”
